Accelerator pump adjustment question

Have a 1984 Merc 120 with Mercarb. Just rebuilt carb and came to the adjustment of accel pump. The kit instructions say to measure from the top of the air horn to the top of the pump rod, but the Merc manual says to measure from the spark arrestor mounting surface to the pump rod. Both say the...

Oil Seeping from Gear Housing Hole (Model I)

I have a 1984 Model I outdrive. There is a slow oil leak from a hole on the starboard side of the lower unit. The hole is open, and is locted on the bottom of the rounded cylindrical part of the gear housing on the forward end.

Any ideas as to what this hole is for and what has...

Any Merc 120HP's that DON"T BOG on accel?

According to my book, the pre-1987 120HP mercarbs had insufficient accelerator pump capacity and tend to bog out during acceleration. I have this problem. Does anyone with a 120 not have the problem? If so, what carb is on your boat? I want to get one that works!

    Can't Re-attach Outdrive the last .10"

Have a 1984 120R, Model I outdrive. Trying to get it back on after replacing U-joint. It has only .1" gap from full attachment. Do I tighten the nuts to force it on or is there something not right?

Could it be engine alignment? Could it be just the compression of the rubber ring in...

    Need to Change Outdrive Gaskets?

I had to remove the outdrive from the transom/gimball assembly (6 nuts) to check the U-joint. Do I need to replace all the O-rings and gaskets? They seem to be in good condition.

This is a Model I outdrive, 1984. I think they were replaced about 3 years ago by former owner.

Help-Clanking noise in upper outdrive area

I have a 1984 IL4 Merc 120HP, model I outdrive 1.98R. After about 2 hours of skiing, I started hearing a loud metallic clankity clank noise from the bell housing area or maybe just inside the transom. It comes and goes, and will disappear when the trim is changed. It doesn't occur at any...

    Define "marine grade" wiring

What type of wiring is good in a boat? I assume the copper should be plated with silver or tin? Should the insulation be teflon?

Need carb kit just to clean carb?

I need to clean out the accelerator punp area of my carb since it has some crud in it. The pump spring is corroded also (probably got water in it). Looks like someone replaced the gaskets and rubber piston not long ago-- can I just clean it all up and re-assemble or is it essential to replace...

    No Vacuum Advance to distributor!

I have a 1984 4winns IL4 120HP merc. There is no vacuum advance line going to the distributor, nor do I see a fitting that a line could attach to. Ditto for the 2 barrel merc carb. What gives? Is this normal?

I am trying to figure out why the engine dies when I give it gas-I have to...

How to seal drain tube in ski well?

What is used to seal around the aluminum tube that drains water from the ski well back to the bilge area? I am replacing the bulkhead, and am planning on using marine grade RTV silicone to fill between the bulkhead wood and tube. Then I'll fiberlass the ski well, including the bulkhead. I will...

    Spray can foam ok?

Anyone used the spray can foam from Home Depot to fill between stringers? I need to fill a few small areas, (about 1'x1'x6") not the whole boat. I know that stuff is very nasty, but at least it's cheap and easy to find.

    Epoxy sticks after ethylene glycol?

I read the posts about using ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) to stop rotting, but what does that do to the ability of epoxy to stick? It seems like there would be a sticky film on the wood. The places I would like to use it do not allow wiping off the film since they are down into wooden areas.<br...

Stringer Repair ?--Doesn't Look Like the Book

I've accessed the keel stringer and instead of a rectangular shaped stringer ( fiberglass covering a 3/4 thick pine board), it looks like the foam was blown in before the fiberglass cured. The glass bows out in various areas so the stringer is sometimes about 1" wide, sometimes about 3"...

    Rotting form bottom up-1984 4winns

Is it common for stringers and the keel board to rot from the bottom up? I took off part of the sole and the ski well floor to see what things look like. The sole and top areas of the stringers/keel are perfect (except for the area I know leaked), but the lower parts of them are wet or black...

Cast stringers to preserve floor strength?

I have water in the bottom of my boat (and in the bottom hull) that is rotting stringers and lower wood areas. The floor itself is bonded well to the foam and very strong and stiff, except for the areas that leak due to a lousy repair job the former owner did. So far I have cut out about a 2 x...

    Water in hull-just dry out?

I have water in the hull, which is full of foam. Can't I just open some area up and let it dry, then seal it? Does the existing foam have to come out?

Also, I cut out a section of the floor (sole) to access the bottom and stringers. To re-install the floor area, do you install a...

    Filling 120 Merc outdrive fluid

I did my first outdrive oil change-it's a 120 model (IL4 engine), 1984. I drained the old, pumped in 1 qt into the bottom hole using the quicksilver pump kit, but nothing has come out the vent hole, which is way up on the outdrive, not on the lower unit. Manual says it takes 28 oz., but doesn't...

What's this tube for? (carb to fuel pump)

Have a 1984 120 hp merc, in-line 4. There is a plastic tube hanging loose from the carb, running down the side of the engine. Previous owner says it was always like that, and the boat also hesitatates when accelerating from an idle. I noticed that there is an open port on the fuel pump with a...

Fuse sizes for blower, bilge, etc?

I need to replace the fuses in the boat I just bought, and some are missing. What fuses should I use for the following:
Bilge pump
Blower
Horn
Nav lights
Ignition.

I don't see the info in my book.
Boat is 1984 120 Mercruiser, 4 cyl, but I doubt that matters.
