Most dangerous day on the lake EVER!

I have a small lake near my home that is easy to get to. Fishing is usually up until 10am when it gets hot, then the swimmers/skiers/PWC come out. Unwritten rule but followed closely. We got out there about noon on Friday just so I could pull the kids around on the tube and pull into some of...

Prop for best fuel economy at cruise speed

Evinrude 200hp ('78) (1.86 Gear Ratio) 20ft Fiberglass Deep-V 14 1/2 x 19 Aluminum CMC Jackplate 6"x"6 Currenly set with AV plate 1" above bottom of hull *All speeds on GPS, freshwater Since I upped my HP from 140 to 200 I'm getting better performance all around, but I think I can do better for...

    Look at this old one!

Evinrude Fisherman #5522 - 01625 5.5hp (I believe 1962) I'm not sure what I want to do with this. It looks like it's in great condition and really clean. The previous owner said it was running the other day (no reason to think he's telling a fish story here) but needs carb adjustment and I...

Looking for a job in Marine field?

Re: Looking for a job in Marine field? There are a lot of independent guys up here in Seattle - and there are a LOT of boats. A guy I met today is a diver and works on bow thrusters, rudders, etc. on the big boats. Much of the fleet from "Deadliest catch" calls Ballard home port. There are also...

    What do you call this?

...ok, let's get the jokes out of the way first "Time to get a new motor" "Time to upgrade your anchor" 1985 Evinrude 25hp I picked this up today as a parts motor for some labor trade and already have someone who needs the tiller, which is great since it's set up for controls so I'm not out...

    1982 Evinrude 140hp starter / solenoid issues

OK, so I'm a bit stumped here. I was working on this motor a guy wants running to sell and at first it would crank over as I checked spark and compression on each cylinder (which were fine). I pumped fuel into the carbs and the starter slowed, then wouldn't engage. I took the starter to the...

    Carb jet confusion - 1978 200HP Evinrude

Re: Carb jet confusion - 1978 200HP Evinrude Is it #28 on this or are you referring to #33? #33 and #26 are the ones I cleaned with the wire.

    Carb jet confusion - 1978 200HP Evinrude

Model E200849R My motor was acting up a bit (rough idle and noticeable hesitation at transition point of about 2000ish - 3000ish rpms) so I decided to do a simple carb cleaning. I pulled the plugs on the 2 jets located on each side of the carb (12 total) and fished bare 24ga copper wire...

    Helping out new boaters

I work on a lot of Johnson/Evinrude (1973-1993) motors and frequently my customers are new to boating. Oftentimes they don't have a bunch of boating friends and are left to fend for themselves to figure it all out. Earlier this week a guy was having trouble starting his nice 1990 Evinrude 88spl...

What do you do about bad gas (fuel, that is)?

On our way to the lake this morning I filled my 6 gallon plastic can and 2 1/2 gallon backup since there is nowhere to get fuel on or near this little lake. We left the dock headed to the other end of the lake. About 5 minutes in my 200 lost speed and power then completely died a few seconds...

    Power Upgrade - first run

Re: Power Upgrade - first run I'm on the lake right now. I raised the motor 3" and there is no difference in measured performance other than the hole shot is more touchy. The water skims right under the anti vent. I'm going to run a couple laps just to verify

Big red plug - what years?

Re: Big red plug - what years? I more-or-less just did this in the past two days. I think you'd be good all the way back to '78 depending on religious views on VRO. To the best of my knowledge it would be completely plug-n-play. Since I don't use the remote for anything other than throttle and...

Uh, oh. What happened? '77 9.9hp Evinrude

I was finishing up at the lake yesterday and decided to run my kicker for a few minutes just to get it some run time. It started first pull but seemed a bit sluggish after a minute or two. I "think" I backed the throttle off but I'm not positive and put in in neutral. Next thing I know it was...

    Power Upgrade - first run

For what it's worth, I've posted before that I was getting a bit frustrated with the boat/motor performance I was getting from my Johnson 140 (good boat, good motor, not good together). Sluggish hole shot, trouble holding and sloppy plane at cruise speed, 4500 rpms required for hull cruise...

    140hp to 225hp upgrade

Re: 140hp to 225hp upgrade I meant, I was surprised when I saw it was 10 years older when I went to look at it but I also didn't pay for a 1989. I got it mounted this morning after renting a cherry picker, gave it good lubrication in each cylinder throughout slowly turning the flywheel...

    140hp to 225hp upgrade

Re: 140hp to 225hp upgrade Here's the "new" motor. Power and length are within factory spec. I also put on a CMC 6" jackplate with 6" height adjustment. I'm not sure what the prop is, I'll look at that tomorrow. Getting the motor off the trailer took all the energy I had left after a 6 hour drive.

    140hp to 225hp upgrade

I'm hanging a 225hp Evinrude on my 19.9ft Glasply runabout next week. It's not really top end that I'm trying to achieve since I already get 41mph from my Johnson 140hp (at 5000-5200). My hole shot right now is extremely sluggish with a 13 1/4x19 SS and I can't keep a steady plane unless I run...

'80 Johnson 140hp Carb problems today

I was out on the ol' Salish Sea (Puget Sound) today with my family and about 20 minutes in I noticed my motor was acting a bit different. Normally I can get it up to 38-42 mph but my top end today was only about 31 and max RPMs were only 4200. I don't usually push it WOT on the sound but tried...

Ignition question for the experts - Evinrude 70hp 1990

Motor has no spark. Happened all of a sudden. Checked all three coils with a tester. Starting RPM is probably 800 - very strong so it's well above the spark threshold. I thought it might be the kill switch so I bypassed it. Nothing. I'm leaning toward the trigger/timer base now. I checked the...
