    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Yea I've had some runaway accidents with power tools, as long as it's not needing a trip to the clinic for stiches, it's all good. I still have a good sized collection of solid and blind rivets as well. Never can have too many and solids are not nearly as expensive.

That sanding is my worst nightmare. for some reason it's nothing but dread for me. Ahh to be young and able to sit like him and run a power tool without the hands becoming numb. Moving forward, the clean up and repairs always take the longest, looking good!

With that much of a load then a 15p replacement would be a good choice.

Looks like your winching the boat too far on the trailer, that last roller is not even under the hull. The roller support rod does look bent and could stand to be bent back. This is how the winch tower is set up on my SS trailer. The original trailer was an Ez-Loader roller trailer and the Y...

Ah yeah the aroma of corrosion as it hits the air, sorta like a combination of dirty gym socks and stinky cheese. :sneaky:

They may have some used in good shape props that you could buy at a reduced rate and return for a different one if that one doesn't work out. My guess with a light Holly 18', a 75 HP motor that a 17p x 13-1/4"d aluminum 3 blade would hit the mark. Most likely they'll want to sell you the most...

Propping a boat is almost a science. To give any kind of accurate advice on a prop a few things are needed. Motor Current prop pitch and diameter. WOT RPMs and speed. I know the 75 HP is new to the boat so that's up in the air I'd assume. So give what info you have and we can help you guess...

Just add up the layers and then allow for a proper bucktail for the solids. I can't remember right now the exact amount needed but .125 min is ringing a bell for a proper bucktail. Personally I would only do a .080 outside patch rather than adding thinner inside and outside, especially if your...

You have plans to address the trailer frame rust? When it was stripped down would have been a good time to remove the rust and put some primer/paint on it. Rust is considered corrosion of the steel and as said "rust never sleeps". How heavy is the motor and what else do you plan on adding for...

1966? Starcraft, any idea what model

You have an extensively modified previously closed bow Starcraft runabout that at one time could have been any number of models but most common are the Jet Stars. Also it's not a 66, looks from the pics to be a flat bottom which dates it pre-1965 when SC went to a deadrise hull in all models...

The negative and positive primary wires should be the same gauge wire and yes the fuse block ground must be on the same battery as the positive. Otherwise it will seek ground anyway it can and may use your boat for the path. This also causes electrolysis corrosion and will eat holes in aluminum.

Nice to see you got the old Holly out on the water. (y) Electrical issue like you say sounds like the battery is grounded to the hull.

Hey Decker, welcome back. Some of the old gang is still active here but we have many newer active members too.

    Aluminum extrusion trim sources?

My local fabrication and welding shop had a whole bunch of different Al in all shapes and sizes. Not sure any was small like you want but if you have one locally it's worth a look.

Yeah amazing what a young man can do in short order, now my hands are numb for a day after I use a power tool for an extended period. A wire wheel or cup brush will get the crud out of the recessed and pitted areas. Drill must have a side handle!

Oh boy those dents are a tough one to get right again. I'm no body and fender man but from experience I know that you can't beat large dents back into place from the inside when there's a crease. Marine Tex for bondo made mine less obvious and it sands fairly easy.

Snooping for corrosion holes in the bottom is a good plan. I would only pull ribs that had a leak show up or a visible pinhole and normally that would be in the stern/bilge area where water collects and tends to stand. John is right about taking out too many ribs at once, the hull could relax...

    Ss16 floor supports

I would replace those old blind rivets holding the deck supports to the ribs. Seeing the dark outline means they're loose and have been for some time.

Yeah it's nothing to compensate for, nothing on a boat is square or level and will drive OCD types to madness. If anything the slope will move water from the deck.
