Pressure treated wood will interact with the aluminum hull and destroy it.

    68 Offshore restoration

I removed the brace on mine. It required adding mounting bolts to the side windows for support. Seems plenty sturdy for my purposes now. My windshield frame already had damage from a PO so I didnt have a lot to lose by cutting the brace off. Makes getting in and out easier too. Somewhere in...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Looks good, that will make for a nice platform and walkway. If unsealed, make it easy on yourself to get to so you can seal it. Once covered up in a marine environment it will definitely mold, even though it will probably take many years to actually rot. Even one coat of anything to seal it...

Those motors are crazy! Read about them after your hint. I would tie the bracket and transom into the main stringers, as well as the sides of the hull. Beef up the transom as shsu said too. Curious how it turns out cause a bracket had crossed my mind more than once. That is going to be an...

Inherited new boat. Unsure what it is exactly

Whatever kind of Starcraft she is, thats a nice boat! Welcome and enjoy working on it, great canvas to start with. Beyond what has already been said, Id be looking out for ferrous metal that the PO put in. Would also look close at that transom, check it for rot.

Welcome Jason! Good looking old boat you have there. Looks like you need a motor for it. What are your plans for her?

    1978 SS 16 restoration

Would hate to see the starcraft go but I understand the issue you’re having with it. I like the idea of keep both haha. Its like a tool chest - every tool has its purpose. The 160ss would look sweet towed behind a 43’ trawler…

Hello everybody! 1989 221V Islander Restoration.

I was thinking of it being made out of aluminum, and thats a lot less weight. Sure it would work, but wood/fiberglass is heavy and can rot, vs aluminum which is light and damn near indestructible. Probably stronger too.

Hello everybody! 1989 221V Islander Restoration.

Im a big fan of outboards on offshore brackets, and 2x 115’s is great redundancy in case one fails. Put some weight forward if possible to counter balance the boat. Id have a pro build the bracket for the back then beef up the transom to handle it. You gain a ton of deck space too then. Id...

Raising transom height on 12' Tinny. Worth it?

What about a manual jack plate? Easy to install, fine tune as you want. No customizing of the boat needed, removable too.

Hello everybody! 1989 221V Islander Restoration.

Welcome (step) brother! Great boat with the full hardtop. Will be an insane fishing machine when rebuilt, and looks like it has been catching em for a while. If your current motor/outdrive are in great shape, Id use em til they break, but thats just me. At the same time Id rebuild the boat...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

1/8 would probably be overkill honestly, but would still be light. I used 1/8 on my 160ss for some stuff and wish I had gone smaller. These boats arent even made of AL that thick. 4 triangle bottom supports, maybe some additional cross members under the platform. But with 1/8 for the...

    1974 Chieftain 25 "Adventurer" Restoration

Since you are open to ideas for a swim platform…. An aluminum platform with aluminum supports. Instead of teak wood or trex, put hydro-turf on the deck part that looks like teak. Fools people all the time on my boat, they think its real wood but its closed cell foam. Lightweight, comfortable...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I really like that bow cover too!! Will put that on my future wish list. Biggest thing, as @Rasdiir said with that electrical diagram, is dont assume wire gauge is correct for your own application. Gauge needs to be matched to the length of the run for the given amperage. Ive been using this...

    1972 18 FT Starcraft SS

Looked at some of your pics again to get an idea of how its mounted vs the gunnel boards. Mine is mounted 3-4” higher than yours. I see those bolts holding it on though and its a tough spot for sure to get to. Since its only 1/4” difference between the boards and mount, could you shave that...

    1972 18 FT Starcraft SS

I like that top piece of trim on those boards, gives a real nice finished look to it. Is that trim original? As far as controls go, a PO mounted mine higher up, on the gunnel. Actually cant imagine it being lower and is comfortable up there.
