    Just 22 bolts to remove cylinder head.----No timing issues involved.-----Easy on a fresh water motor.----A simple test device is used to check peak output of the electronic magneto.----Buy one for say $10 or make one with wire , cardboard and glue.

    Checked thermostat ?----Does spark jump a gap of at least 3/8" on the 3 leads ?---The motor is 45 years old and possibly 5 owners.-----Remove head gasket to inspect cylinders.----Head gasket is cheap compared to ignition parts / carburetor kits or an hr labor at a big shop !

    Just take bolts / nuts off and see if lower unit drops.----Look for possible hidden nut under the trim tab.

    I would not be loosening that.------You may find that the shift shaft is splined and nothing to disconnect.

    Compression should be around 140 PSI.-----Load test the battery.

    Any pictures of this motor and the 3 coils ?----Perhaps some inventive person was trying to modernize this motor ???-----Or a newer motor with an older identification plate???

    Evinrude 55 1978 gearcase

    Use a sharp pointy tool.----Remove o-ring.-----Install the new o-ring.-----That hole may spray water into the exhaust for cooling.----Do not fuss over that hole.

    ????----Of course the piston comes out of this engine !----It just comes out in a different way.----This motor must be taken apart.

    If the primer bulb collapses the fuel pump works very well.----Once a motor starts the primer bulb does NOT need to be hard !

    There are 2 coils under the flywheel.-----There is no primary coil.-----This magneto is elegantly simple .---Used on motors from 1.5 to 40 HP.----Installed from 1950 to 1990 models.----You replacement ignition parts are factory original , or something else?

    When the bulb collapses there is a blockage between the bulb and the fuel supply.---You checked the valves in the bulb ?-----You checked inside the tank ?----Checked anti syphon valve ?-----Why the " industrial " language for what might be a simple fix ?

    Attempting a motor rebuild

    ???-----Take the motor apart first !!!-----Inspect all parts.----Then decide on a path forward.----Needle bearings on the rods are usually OK to reuse.----Reeds are very durable and rarely need to be replaced.
