    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

Finished blind riveting the rails today. Then spent some time prepping the transom too. When I imagine the wood sandwiched to my hull, Im wondering if a thin aluminum backer plate would be an issue? Also looking at 2-part jb weld AL as the filler. Whats the best recommended material for...

Got all the original supports riveted back in. Used solids again for a more solid build. Also replaced 1/4 of the blinds on the inner gunnel trim, will do another 1/4 after dinner. Then its just the blinds under the RR trim left to do. The rest of the week I will spend prepping/ building...

Looking real nice! I like the idea where floors are removable and the sides are AL. Thats solid.

Thanks @Watermann I believe it was one of your threads I was actually reading that on. I found one of those rust looking spots on my boat and all the blinds are rusty inside... I could take an hour and replace em quick. Did any of you add more than the original? Live update, just cleaned up...

@SHSU yes top is blinds, except for 1 solid on each side where it meets the other gunnel tops. Then the 5 wood screws across the top. Coated all the wood screws in glue before setting - figured it couldnt hurt. There were a few extra holes already and everything was pretty close, except for...

Bow is riveted! Just the rub-rail and nose piece left, so will finish that when i get my rails. May be a few, havent ordered yet. And some pics of my less than stellar riveting lol. Considering they were blinds before, Im not worried. Pretty happy with it so far even though my work isnt...

@SHSU Hahaha of course there are pictures... it just wasnt done yet. My practice AL piece was 3/16” thick and i just did the smaller length rivet of the 2 solids I got. I forget what size, but meant to go through 2 pieces of AL on the boat. Ill take some pics of the ones that were not so nice...

@classiccat Thanks! The practice ones turned out great. The boat ones, most were good lol. But the bow area is awkward to work on in my defense as a FNG. I forgot to turn down the pressure after doing my first few! Thanks for the reminder. Here are a few more pics of the front! Going to...

Been following along quietly watching you progress! Love seeing the big older boats being brought back to life. Keep up the good work before the hot weather comes back!!

@MNhunter1 Looks closer to the original stuff. Im just using whats on hand to save a buck. If it doesnt work I will circle back and try that stuff. Thanks!

I fully understand not putting too much money into the boat. Im already past what I paid for my boat and 2 motors lol, but some of that is in tools so thats a wash. Will you be able to remove the floor without removing the side panels with it being AL?? Cause that would make a lot of sense.

    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

@SHSU Glad you like it! I will still have front seats, just no walkway - slightly awkward. Admiral insists on sitting up front, and I want a casting deck. We will see how it turns out down the road lol. Ill plan on gluing the neoprene in then too. Doesnt seem like a big issue if you have...

    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

All right! Soft start again... baby steps... put the last coat of spar on the front bow wood and got the AL pieces almost ready to punch in. Im replacing the old foam under the bow cover with some neoprene. Will that be an issue? Was just going to glue it to the wood, pretty sure that will...

Really awesome you got to give your other boat to your grandson. I know what that will mean to him. On a funny note, give a kid a boat and they will be too broke to get into any trouble!!

Looking at the differences, doesnt seem to be an issue for the side panels you are using it for. Cant wait to see how it looks all riveted in! I like the hosing out the boat idea - nothing better than an easy cleanup. Making me consider other options for my sides now. If money were no object...

Thanks @crankbait cowboy The list changed a little bit and will probably change again. As the boat comes together it will start making more sense! Only thing I cant control is the weather. My garage has a big buddy heater, but its uninsulated. In CA, March will generally be the start of...

    21' Holiday Rebuild

There have been people who have done AL floors. No reason why not for a side panel. Would cost more but certainly is indestructible. I remember hearing about the “skillet” effect from when the sun heats up a surface, but that seems to be for where you walk more. For the battleship, more metal...

@benfish909 Thanks for the advice. Ill give her plugs n muffs, and ill use plugs. My hearings already pretty shot from hunting haha. At least my neighbors have been watching the slow resto and are aware of whats about to come. They are all for it! It may be an HOA but it pays to know your...
