    Cross country trailering advice/tips

Interesting enough, I’ve only had three roadside incidents in my 30+ years (~150k+ miles) of trailering. Two out of the three were brake related. Smoked a brake drum late one night on the side of the interstate. The drum was glowing hot when we stopped on the side of the highway to inspect...

Scientist claim to have brought back Dire wolf

They basically pieced together a cloned the animal. If they are genetically identical, they will exhibit the exact same identical traits. If you made a part from a 100 year old blue print, would you expect your part would match up with a 100 year old part unseen?

    Batteries for 21ft CC

It's all about battery construction and the batteries ability to withstand the abuse of (multiple) deep discharges. Automotive Lead-acid batteries are designed for short bursts of high energy. i.e. starting the engine and short term powering of accessories. They’re not built to be discharged...

    Starter getting only 4 volts

DC current flows from positive, thru the starter windings and back to ground. As such, both the positive and negative cables must be properly sized to load. Using a large diameter positive cable and a smaller ground cable will reduce the current flow through the circuit to that of the smaller...

    e-tec 40hp oil use

    instrument problem :/

Well, lets start with the year, make and model of your boat. Trim and tilt - you will need to do some troubleshooting to see if it's the sending unit, the wiring or the gauge. Depth Finder - more than likely the transducer is bad. Will most likely need to replace the entire unit.

    Batteries for 21ft CC

A lot of people apparently don’t know the difference between MCA and CCA battery ratings ;) The difference between MCA and CCA is the temperature which the test is conducted. The MCA test is conducted at 32F while the CCA rating is conducted at 0F. Use the following formula to compare...

    Harbor freight jack.

Law suit was filed for HF selling floor jacks that “are substantially identical in shape and appearance” to ones sold by Snap-on. Motion was denied because U.S. District Court ruled there were similarities between the designs “the overall effect of each design on the eye of the ordinary...

    Harbor freight jack.

Was looking at the jacks at Harbor freight but not impressed with the quality of the stamped steel construction. Bought a Matco “The Beast” that wouldn’t hold pressure (very long) at a yard sale for $20. Bought a $25 seal kit and never looked back.

2000 merc 200 EFI no start/no fuel pump

If you have any electronics training at all, it’s easy enough to troubleshot a simple EFI with a voltmeter, a set of pin probes, a schematic and a pin out of the module in question.

    nautical charts

As someone who has been “flashed” twice and “lost” once, it’s easier said than done to go from satellite to map navigation if you don’t have a means to determine the exact position from which to start. A battery powered, hand held gps not only gives you position data, but will get you home in...

    nautical charts

I’ve not seen large format book maps in years. NOAA discontinued support for printed maps several years ago. https://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/learn/nautical-cartography.html I run two (2) chart plotters for redundancy with a hand-held battery backup.
