    Vintage Mercury Cooling Issue

There it is . . . One melted piece of plastic. . . I'll be ordering a new powerhead gasket and whatever the thingy that replaces the plastic. Would an o-ring work? Looks like this motor may be saved.

    Quit My Job . . .

It occurred to me as I was making the cushions that I'll probably need a second machine at some point as a spare/backup in case my Consew 206RB craps out. . . . as bullet proof as the are. As I accumulate some 'retained earnings' I'll keep an eye out for anothewr machine . . . Consew or Juki...

    Vintage Mercury Cooling Issue

Looks like I re-built the motor in 2016. Here is a picture from my thread back then. I assume the 'washer' is where the arrow points? From 2016 . . . Looks to be a rubber grommet maybe and a pressure fit once the tube is inserted?

    Vintage Mercury Cooling Issue

OK, will do. Just have to remember how I took the thing apart a few years ago 🤪

    Vintage Mercury Cooling Issue

Also, do these engines rely on enough water pressure to counteract the back-pressure from the exhaust? If so, a leak in the cooling water supply would make sense.

    Vintage Mercury Cooling Issue

I did not, but I believe I checked at the top of the tube for leaks . . . although it was difficult to see.

    Vintage Mercury Cooling Issue

Quick update . . . I put the new baffle in (used the OEM baffle as my handy work with the stainless steel plate was not 100%). Anyway, the engine still does not pee very well . . . better than it did, but the tell tale stream dies out after a minute or two. I removed the inspection plug on...

    Truck for towing

Published spec's for the boat is 4,437 lbs. Dry weight with the 5.0 engine. . . so it is fairly light, and your dry weight will be a bit higher with the 5.7 engine . . . call it 4,500 lbs. Minimal fuel and some gear will add about 500 lbs. so, your boat is about 5,000 lbs on the trailer and the...

    Truck for towing

Agreed ^^^^ The stated weight of the boat & trailer seem light. Maybe check on that? Maybe tell us what boat & what trailer . . I'd be thinking you are more towards a dry wieght of 7,000 lbs. As for the truck . . . I have an F-150 with the EcoBoost 3.5 (V6) and it tows my 14,000 lb rig...

    Quit My Job . . .

The upholstery business is gaining some traction . . . I finished the BW bow seats and have booked a Chris-Craft 28 full cockpit job. Also may book a Cruisers 328 full cockpit job soon. . In addition to my IT Consulting gig and working on fixing up the house, the Admiral now thinks I am...

    Is this a reasonable quote?

    Based on the pictures . . . $4K is a good deal.

    350 mag mpi manifold/elbow temp

Sounds like you have CAT's with raw water cooling. The exhaust manifolds will be the one of the last stops of the raw water on its way through the engine. Therefore it should be the hottest of the major parts of the engine. Raw water does directly flow to the riser portion of the exhaust, so...

    Ideas for refinishing boat bottom

As you get older, you tend to care less about what your bottom looks like :ROFLMAO: . . . but I digress. As for the boat . . . sand and gelcoat would be my choice. Probably should have been done earlier in the restoration process, but with enough ingenuity, you can get the boat safely in the...

Two questions: Fuel sending unit & Thru hull sonar

The fuel tank sender area should be accessible by opening one of the deck plates. Either towards the stern or in the ski locker.

    Is this a reasonable quote?

Typically, a repair shop is going to replace parts that are suspect and not roll the dice or rework a part that a DIY'er might do. I do all my own work, so the quote seems pricey, but not sure what your alternatives are.

    2001 wellcraft 270 costal powered by a mercruiser 7.4 mpi with a bravo 3. Doesn’t accelerate.

The clutch can be glazed, but it may not look all that bad. Post some pictures when you have it out. It should look something like this . . . .

    Glastron SX 175 Gas Smell

Nothing normal about a gasoline leak  You will need to find the source and remedy it. If the gas fume detector can sense the fumes, then you have a problem. There should be an access hatch to look at the top of the tank where the fuel sender and hose fittings are located. There...

    5.7 Merc coolant check?

Yes, sounds like an open cooling, aka raw water cooling, aka sea water cooling. No 'coolant' involved. You can post a picture of the engine for verification . . . the heat exchanger (if there was one) and the associated hoses are hard to miss. Are you in a region that gets cold (freezing...
