I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Yeah, as of this morning it's looking more like a carb rebuild is in order. 😏 I did start a thread over in the Mercury forum: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/1985-50hp-4-cylinder-power-loss.758226/

    1985 50HP 4-cylinder power loss

Todays update: I removed the fuel lines from the primer bulb and they were fine. They weren't bunged up inside. Both are braided. One is brand new and fairly soft, the other is a few years old, a different brand and has a hard outer case. I was curious about that and decided to take the...

Where to find a solid boat

I've had more success on Facebook Marketplace than on craigslist.

    boat seats

I think the OP is talking about a different type of seat/post. No tangs and whatnot. More like these: They're quite common on bass boats. Anglers often remove the seats completely in order to give more deck space. I did it all the time with my bass boats. Like so:

    1985 50HP 4-cylinder power loss

I can't imagine how the rings could get gunked up when the engine has been running fine for several years. Beats me. 🤷‍♂️

No autoblend system on this engine. And yes indeedy, the engine was spinning at full starting speed.

    1985 50HP 4-cylinder power loss

Update from this morning: I went to my Mercury repair shop, bought a can of Power Tune and talked with the owner. I explained everything that's going on and his first thought is that I could have bunged up the new fuel lines when I replaced the primer bulb. It's a very common issue. That...

Does that mean I have to take it off full-auto? 🔫 :ROFLMAO: Yeah, I was concerned about welding next to the edge. I wasn't positive if there was a sealant under the joint. I'm pretty sure that if I took it to a welder that they'd just say "Hey, it's no problem, we can weld that closed and...

I do have SeaFoam. I'll look around for Merc Power Tune. And I just texted my buddy to see if he has a borescope.

Haven't done that since before the splash in May 2020.

I understand completely about the oil. No worries. And yeah, my thought at first was lack of oil. 😳 I'd thought there was no head gasket but wasn't positive. I've had the starter off plenty of times. No biggie really. Just getting it reinstalled with the power terminal away from the cowling...

I just remembered that while we were filtering the fuel that I could see the oil in the mix, not just the gasoline.

Is it buried under all this stuff?

    1985 50HP 4-cylinder power loss

We were very careful to make sure that we mixed oil with the gas. We had the oil and the mixer thing with us. How do I remove the Transfer Port Covers? I'll start searching for a video too.

    1985 50HP 4-cylinder power loss

I did a compression test last week with a borrowed compression tester and all four cylinders were at 70PSI! 😧 We tested it after warmup with and without the throttle open. No difference there. So, I bought a new compression gauge and tested again. Same result! Then we added a couple...

    1985 50HP 4-cylinder power loss

On 1 Jun 22 I was on a fishing trip. The engine ran normally at startup, then cruised to the first fishing hole at 5,300 RPM WOT like it usually does. When we slowed down, the engine didn't sound right. It burbled and gurgled and made the 2-stroke ring-ding-ding sound. Hadn't heard that...

    boat seats

When I had my Bass Tracker, I always pulled the seats off, stowed the pedestals, then remounted the seats into the holes. Never had a problem that way.

We managed to get out to the garage early this morning, like before 0730! 🤪 🌅 And we actually started installing rivets. Rib #3 has 74 rivet holes. We got 31 installed. We learned more as we went along too. Thanks again to @classiccat for the heads up about using 1/4" rivets for the oblong...
