    4.3 vortec Mercruiser..lots of questions

I bet that if you pull the drive the driveshaft bellows will have water in it. Have you tried the power tilt, it may have water in it also. If you pull the drive then it would be a good time to pull the engine. That way you can clean the bilge and do any repairs from water damage.

    No thermostat, overheating

There is a good chance you have a head gasket leak. Your first post mentions an overheat event. Since you are drawing water from a thru hull fitting rules out the drive incoming water.

SEI preload and a stern jack

The 18’ Donzi/ 383MPI I had was scary fast @ 70 on GPS riding up so high the pitot tube would come out of the water. The “K” planes kept the chine walk down. because of the deep V a turn at slow speed brought water to the rub rail. A guy drove all the way from California to buy the boat. One...

SEI preload and a stern jack

Just curious, how much more speed did the stern jack provide? Does the boat “chine walk” when trimmed out? Does the boat have a “hook” near the transom? Checkmates are fast hulls as there was a dealer for them years ago here in New Orleans. Most had Mercury outboards.

Alpha 1 Outdrive water flow diagram

First you need to drop the lower unit to see if there is a complete pump with the impeller. You should see a pipe that plugs into the top of the pump housIng that is plugged into the water pocket cover in the upper housing. There is supposed to be a hose on the port side of the bell housing...

2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

I could not agree with you more. These complicated cooling systems were the fore runner for the catalytic converter manifold$$$$$. I never had this kind of cracking as Mart285 is having in over 30 years,

Water in the oil 1985 Searay 454/340

Are the engines fresh water cooled? If so check the coolant level. If the coolant is full then it might just be an exhaust manifold riser. I they are raw water cooled it could be plenty of things. Since you are a mechanic pulling the plugs as you said would be the first place to check.

    Distributor alternatives

Your engine should have had a Petronics electronics module. The reason why the backfiring was happening is the rotor shaft got rusted and wears out the rubbing block on the points. Possible that the original module went out and someone put points in. You can add a Petronics kit, it just drops...

    350 mag idle vibration

If the engine had not been started for a period of time before the service it could be a compression problem. A weak cylinder will smooth out with increased rpm.

    Is my shifter installed right?

You have it right. It is normal for the propeller to “ratchet” when the drive is in either gear. If it did that in neutral then the shift is not splined right.

Mercruiser 5.7L Black Scorpion grinding noise when in neutral

The slave solenoid is under the cover. Look for yellow wires with a red stripe. The other place to look is where the ignition switch is. At one time Mercruiser ignition switches had a problem starting the engine without the key turned. Since the starter only activates in neutral I think the...

    Coupler failure

I have had quite a few customers who had damage from submerged objects always was able to help the customer. Has the drive and prop been inspected by an adjuster? If the damage is less than your deductible then you are out of luck. Just be sure to have the shop check for any additional damage...

    Mercruiser shift interrupter switch

Your current switch may be good. Most times when the switch activates and stops the engine when shifting in or out of gear there is a problem with the shift cable in the drive.

    Starter not engaging flywheel

Ring gears are welded together, I have seen one that the weld broke. The flywheel has a raised area that backs up the ring gear. It must be thw ring gear that is slipping on the flywheel.

    Starter not engaging flywheel

If the problem is solved with the new starter then the only thing was the starter drive on the original starter was the problem.
