Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha One Gen 2

Speedo doesn’t use a cable. It’s a pitot tube which uses water pressure

Fuel injector plastic tip fell into intake hole... now what?

LS injectors are pretty cheap. But those are not correct for a marine engine

    PCV valve/blow by issue

They will, but I would recommend going through it before you run it.. and I wouldn’t pay much. If you are up to bullet proofing it. Add an aluminum head. It needs to have BBF ports as some aftermarket BBF heads come with BBC exhaust ports… but you put an aluminum head on it, you’ll have better...

Well my ignition switch problem wasn’t the switch. It was me.. I omitted the fuel gauge from the old parts boat gauge pack as I have fuel gauges on the gunnel. That left an extra power and an extra ground.. me being a dum dum put the extra power ontop of the volt meter stud, making everything...

    PCV valve/blow by issue

nothing wrong with a good 3.7l.. key point being a good 3.7L. It was a good idea with a few shortcomings that mercruiser abandoned because of the 4.3L

Convert 14ft aluminum closed bow to open

By the looks of it, needs a transom first. Most aluminum boats that are runabouts, it doesn’t hurt anything. But that one is one of a handful of manufacturers from the mid 50s and may have been constructed differently

    Say it ain’t the transom!

Could be the water hose through the gimbal housing.

I’ll update this thread. Hopefully just use this thread from now on as 99% of the specifics are taken care of and it’s very close to being water ready. I also finally got it registered ( with no title/ reg ) which was a relief although the DMV knows what to do and no hassle. It runs but the...

Johnson 90 Oops it did it again

You won’t hear a failing ignition under a no load condition.

Starter crapped out today, I tapped it with a hammer then it worked.

A starter built for a 2.5L or 3.0L between 1965 and 1990 will work. I could give you the numbers off of my starter but I don’t think they mean anything. Pretty sure a PO bought it from DB electrical.

How to test shift interrupter on a Mercruiser?

I got it to run. Needed points. After pulling the old ones it became obvious. They had more green corrosion than the Statue of Liberty.. I also verified power before I pulled it apart. That also showed a problem. The new ignition switch from Napa is shorting power to the ignition terminal all...

    hydraulic steering swap

It’ll work, being you have a standard steering tube. But I can’t imagine a Vevor setup being a good idea… I bought their rotary steering which is advertised as no feedback, but it’s not so I might even have to chuck my simple rotary steering in a year.. boat cover from them is awesome tho

    Mercruiser head gasket replacement

1991 and later I’m pretty sure. You will want one for marine use. They were never used in cars but they were used in fork lifts

How to test shift interrupter on a Mercruiser?

Kinda. I have a fully stocked tool box at work but basic hand tools at home, so anytime I need anything more than basic I have to remember to bring it home, or run to town and buy whatever it is and keep the second at home

How to test shift interrupter on a Mercruiser?

I’ll have to grab my DVOM from work and tackle it. I would almost tow the boat with me to work and work on it at the dealership after work but idk if they would like an 18’ boat in the parking lot all day

How to test shift interrupter on a Mercruiser?

Oh sorry it’s an ‘86 3.0L with the old style interrupter switch. Forgot to put that in there. I guess I could pull the wire off. I didn’t want to touch it as the switch is NLA, with the old wires ( provided it’s good )

How to test shift interrupter on a Mercruiser?

Tried to fire my boat up yesterday ( it’s getting close ). Engine last ran in 2022 in the donor boat but it ran pretty well. I couldn’t get it to fire.. I quick stuck a new condensor in it and cleaned the points as best I could with what I had. and then later jumpered 12v to the coil from the...

Tried firing it up today ( engine hasn’t run since 2022 when I bought it ). No spark. Verified by jumpering power to the coil eliminating a power issue. I’ll have to put points and a condenser in it
