    1972 Starcraft Chieftain 21ft IB/OB project

Just buy a cheap rotted glasser. Volvo was used in many old boats including bayliner if you don’t want to mess with the keyhole. A 3.0L will run that fine. They were optioned with them if they came in the mercruiser flavor. My dad had a ‘73 with the 3.0L and it was fast enough. Gen 2 isn’t...

1993 four winns sundowner 195 transom rot discovered

This is the reason I look at fiberglass boats as parts boats for my tin boats. You could try to get by for the season with CPES or something and a Botch repair but with water entering the bilge as is, how safe would you feel

    Looking at a 1987 Bayliner 2160 Hardtop ???

Well a Bayliner Trophy 2160 hardtop would be one reason to gamble on a Cobra Drive. That said. That’s a big heavy boat. The 3.0L is either a base engine or one that somebody swapped in. I know they were common with 4.3’s and that was enough. My dad’s current fishing barge is a 1986 Mark Twain...

Going to look at a possibly seized engine tomorrow

470 can be swapped with a 3.0L as a near bolt in if you don’t mind a major HP loss. 4.3L replaced it but will require mounting adjustments. The 470 is a cool peice of engineering that mercruiser abandoned before it had all the kinks worked out. 40 years later, it should really be avoided…. A...

    Bayliner floor replacement

If the floor isn’t soft then I would be thankful and just keep using it while you can… doing work like that could be a can of worms you aren’t prepared for

    Eco carb cleaners?

Boil a carb in a light solution of lemon juice. I did 4 CB 500/4 carbs with that trick. They were seized and packed with varnish. Too much lemon juice can pull the zinc coating off any parts that have it so you need to be careful if anything is zinc coated

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Fairly common. Parts between 2 back to back years should swap. As long as they are in the same generation. The last generation of 20-35hp came in 1977 if I recall. 1976 would be different

    Mercrusier MC 1 outdrive

Just the u joint may be different depending on the year which can be dealt with.Transom assembly went from pin in to bolt in and there are differences there but just the leg itself can be swapped

    Bilge pump/ blower needed

I think I see how it worked. It’s just a blower that attached a bilge pump off the same motor…. This would be for an OMC stringer I’m guessing. The broken assembly is one for the marine museum of fiberglass history. For repair, a modern bilge pump and blower will go a lot further in terms of...

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

I put Chinese carbs on lawnmowers, where if they quit working, you might have to walk to the garage. They usually work good enough though not perfect and it’s easier than rebuilding a varnished and seized original. I wouldn’t think of putting one on any kind of vehicle you take a distance. Land...

    Mercruiser Spark plug broken

fwiw 5/8” is exactly the same as 16mm. If you notice some sae and metric kits only have one or the other and usually not both. That’s why

Stuck on what to do with mercruiser controls

I’ve just decided to keep the control the way it is and use the old dash trim switches. I can put new bushings in it if I need to. Possibly paint it black and put the black decals on it

Lake depth and how shallow can you run?

I personally wouldn’t run without a depth sounder. I use a Striker 4 GPS which was $100 and it’s actually pretty good. Set your waypoint when you leave the dock so that you can get back. I have the depth alarm set to 10’ as the lake I run in has depths from 1’-60’ with the median depth being 40’

Lake depth and how shallow can you run?

It’s not right though. It’s robbing you of some performance and it’s making your leg 5” deeper than it needs to be. 3’ of water is about as shallow as I’d want to go. I’ve got a 15” DF25A on my boat and have ran in 2.7’ when I was ontop of a sunken island and didn’t know it.

    Ok. Trailer time!

I do all my trailer registration’s online now and it’s never asked for an inspection number. They never have at the DMV either. Only thing I can think of is something in the metro area as their regulations are tighter. I do usually get an inspection anyway. But for sure nobody ever looks

    Ok. Trailer time!

Trailer inspection, and i think motorcycle inspection goes in the system differently and they are not locked to looking for an inspection in the system. 4 wheel vehicles go 2 consecutive years without inspection before they will decline re registration

    Points/condenser conversion kit

Nova will work only for a short time on an OMC coil. The voltage spike from the mag is too much for them causing failure. There was an older ignition module that was specifically for outboards but they were discontinued

Located my old family’s boat one week too late

it would be awesome if it happened. The only reason I don’t have a chief or an islander is I haven’t found one at the right time… but that boat is the reason I have 2 StarCrafts of my own.

Located my old family’s boat one week too late

A guy came into my work ( tire shop ) who knew who i was, and looked familiar to me. He asked how I was and everything and then told me he just got rid of the old red boat we used to have. Which was my dads iconic 1973 StarCraft chieftain that we restored when I was a kid. It had a tree fall on...
