    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Thanks, I took another look at my manual and indeed the aft side of the driveshaft bellows does not call for adhesive (“A” on the diagram). I guess the change to the sleeve in the gen 2 vs the clamp in gen 1 makes the difference in not needing adhesive. Based on what I’ve read on this site and...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Thanks, I was just checking because you mentioned the gear oil hose first, but I was referring to the shift cable bellows. I noticed on your other thread that you put the driveshaft bellows on the transom first, then on the bell housing. Did this order give you trouble putting bellows adhesive...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

That is a good thought! I’ve been thinking about adding an AFR gauge, which would give me better diagnostic info on the carb performance. The carb on my motor is a TKS style choke (which replaces a typical choke plate with a heat actuated piston), so you can’t visually check operation while...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Thanks, your order makes sense to me. What did you use on the aft side of the shift cable bellows? The supplied metal crimp clamp?

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Thanks y'all. I have 2 batteries installed with an on-board charger and plan to wire one bilge pump each to each battery directly. I got around to tearing the bellows/hoses all apart and cleaned up today, and it went smoothly. Before i got into it I figured out that it really isn't that hard to...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Separate question, looking for tips on the shift cable installation procedure as part of the bellows replacement. My issue is one of visibility and access, very difficult to reach down behind the motor, let alone see, due to the design of the engine bay, without pulling the motor. Any tips for...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Thanks for the advice/info. Current bilge pump is manual only (no float valve). I’ll steer clear of check valves. I noticed the hose loop could be a bit higher if I replace/extend the hose, might do that. I’m also thinking about adding a secondary pump with an integrated float valve, looking at...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

I think I see what you’re saying, some amount of oil could be infiltrating the cylinder through the valve train while the valves are open. Something to keep an eye on. I’ll keep a close watch on the oil level and recheck the plugs periodically.

    Timing is retarded ;-)

I’d probably have to collect more data with an AFR gauge on the current carb to say if it’s performing ideally. Scott’s mention of 2 and 3 running rich on his motor (seemingly the same as mine) has me thinking perhaps there could be improvement with a different carb (either airflow or fuel...

Wouldn’t that show up in the leak down test though?

    Timing is retarded ;-)

Anyone on here ever tried experimenting with different carbs on the 3.0L? 😎

    Timing is retarded ;-)

Meant to say why the plugs *don’t* look good. Appreciate the insight Scott. Could be how the fuel flows out the carb as to why the middle cylinders run rich. I may tinker with the timing by a few degrees, or possibly try another ignition module. But yeah I agree after all the testing I’m pretty...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

While I was at it, I put the borescope down each cylinder. I did see some signs of what could be relatively minor rust on the top of the pistons, although I suppose it could be some other kind of combustion deposit, not a great sign either way from the looks of it.

    Timing is retarded ;-)

On the downside, after running the motor the other day for another 30 mins or so, mostly at idle while I was checking the timing, the plugs don’t look very good to me. They’re not as clean as before, so they don’t look steam cleaned to me, but #2 and #3 look fouled to me. #1 and #4 seem normal...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

I decided to run a leak down test today. The results were apparently very good, I was getting ~4% leakage on all cylinders (72 psi cylinder on 75 psi air supply). This was done with all plugs out, WOT, and oil fill cap off. It was on a cold motor rather than warm (it’s a chore to get boat out of...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

Also, is there a way to identify when a part has actually been revised/redesigned rather than just changing the p/n on the same old part?

    Timing is retarded ;-)

Thanks Jim. How does one identify when a p/n has been superseded? Should I just assume that is the case whenever there is the little + icon in the catalog?

P/N 811637001 from the Merc catalog.

Still waiting for the prop to come in, and then a free day to go sea trial after that.

    Timing is retarded ;-)

I’m returning the part, and may try another. I believe the seller was running a bait and switch. Advertised as Quicksilver, but what I received came in an AC Delco box with a Quicksilver label slapped on it. Am I wrong or are these not different parts?
