Is this the idle jet? Or?

Take pics of the Plugs, I would clean them instead of replacing them, then run it again to see if that was the issue

1957 Johnson 35hp short to long shaft

Does it have a Spark strong enough to jump a 5/16" Gap? If you use the Pull Stater for the compression Test, you will have to disable the Compression Relief Mechanism. If using the Starter Motor, not necessary.

Best 2 stroke oil for Chrysler / Force outboards

We always ran OMC or Mercury TCW oils in our outboards for more than 35 yrs, never had a Engine Failure, nor did they ever have any significant carbon on the Pistons. I would be more worried about Carbon building up behind the Rings. There a good Engine Cleaner, and I mean Good, not that SeaFoam...

First of all you went and adjusted something, what we don't know. There are several adjustments on the Linkages. Some change Spark Advance, some affect the Sync between the Spark Advance and the Opening of the Carbs, others affect the Position of the Throttle Plates are WOT. Do you have an...

    1979 80HP Mercury

When you adjust/set the Idle speed on these Motors, you it with either cable unhooked, or the Anchor/Adjuster out of its holder. Once Idle Speed is set, you then adjust the Cable Length, so there is a slight bit of Pressure holding the Throttle Linkage against the Idle Stop. Too much Preload can...

    1979 80HP Mercury

Perhaps the Shift Linkage in the Motor is damaged/binding/needs Lubrication If the Throttle Cable is not hooked up, does it is shift easier? If so then perhaps you have too much Preload on the Throttle Cable

Operate the Control with the Cables off the Motor, the Shift Cable will move 1st, and once it stops, the Throttle Cable will begin to move.

    Raising outboard higher

One Caveat regarding placing the AV Plate even/level with the Hull Bottom. This an Aluminium Hull, if it has a Protruding Keel, that will require the Motor be lower than on, a Fiberglass Hull, which usually don't have a protruding Keel

    Raising outboard higher

If it is Bolted to the Transom, there is no Need for any spacer. If it is just fastened with the Clamp Screws, you have to be careful as to how high you go. Too high and the Engine will be at increased Risk of coming off the Transom, due to lack of Clamping Area By chance are you trying to...
