1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

So I found the problem... surprised the boat worked at all. Metal piece had separated in the outdrive. New Sierra cable is installed. Passed the clunk test. We will see how it does in the water.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

This is what happened to mine it seems like. When I pulled the outdrive off it had water deposits in there. I cleaned it all up, greased it a ton and it moved very freely now. My guess is the cable got stretched over time and it not able to move both directions the required 3" to move from...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

That's actually the shift cable I ordered. Not $200+ OEM and not $30 garbage. That company makes a lot of aftermarket boat parts (fuel filters are that also I think...)

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

I tried this and it checked out.... but I think I need to be on the prop side... not the shifter side to really feel it. I plan to replace the shifter cable, just need to locate a decent one. I have seen a few lying around the boat... makes me think the previous owner had purchased bad ones...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

Is there anyway to know what length the cable is before I pull it out? Would like to get the new cable ordered, but I cant get to the boat for another week.

If it comes to this, where is the best place to get replacement cables? There are 100s on Amazon that are cheap... but I would like to get better ones.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

So #1 I set to the required height (top of shift rod to top of lower casing, I think 7.21" if I remember correctly. #2 I used the tools to set it to required position in the transom and on the engine. I think #3 is where I need to focus now. I guess it just surprised me that it could be set...

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

The cables all move freely, checked that when I had the outdrive off. They still move freely with everything on and connected. Just not engaging forward gears.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

So the engine is back in and we took it out for a few hours on lake Michigan and it ran amazing. Took some tuning to the shift cable on the dock. Every test I did on land showed it shifted fine, but once in the water it would only shift into reverse. I made some adjustments to the shift lever...

I also have a Graco x5 airless paint sprayer. Does anyone use airless paint sprayers for boats?

1989 Bayliner Trophy, Hydraulic line for trim replacement

Oh OK, I thought the trim was specific to the boat and not the motor. It's a OMC 5.8L

1989 Bayliner Trophy, Hydraulic line for trim replacement

The starboard side trim plate hydraulic hose sprung a leak on my 1989 Bayliner Trophy, What kinda of hose is used to replace this? Looks like fuel line to me, but not sure fuel line can stand up to hydraulic pressure. Thanks!

    1989 Trophy 24' - Jetski Lift Project

That was something I debated also... not out of the question. Would be tough to fit on the trailer I am using right now though, but maybe Ill explore that option. Don't want another 400lbs on the tongue weight though.

1989 Bayliner Trophy OMC 5.8L - Help with new boat

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the proper gear oil to use in the lower and the method for filling? I have pulled the lower bearing carrier out and it looks good, now just waiting on the long snap ring plier to arrive to I can inspect the forward and reverse gears.

Painting my 1989 Bayliner, Need some advice

Yeah I planned to hit the trailer with some cheap rustolium paint eventually (HVLP also). A lot of good advice here, not sure I am up for a two part poly paint, both financially and skill level. Checked a few out and they are at least twice the cost. I am good with a spray gun on automotive...

Mercury 3.6hp Two Stroke, How to chain lower oil?

I recently received a seized up very old Mercury 3.6hp two stroke outboard, not sure of the model number. I cleaned out the carb and freed up the motor, but I saw some oil by the lower and would like to make sure its sealed and full of gear oil. Where is the drain and fill and what is the...

I've looked at a couple different brands, just to see their instructions, but not seeing any recommendations for which tip to use on a spray gun.
