    Changing colour of gelcoat question

Before the floor is permanently fastened, get some metal plates screwed to the bottom side where the seats go. I see this a lot when we replace floors, but it's always on aluminum boats, usually Lunds. I think the idea is so the seat screws won't pull through if the floor rots.

82 Starcraft MR 180 floor, slight refit and leaks

My idea, change it to support panels running from back to front, walling off the bilge area. Then put in some easily removed sideways panels. Keep the structural support but get easy access.

    My 84 4winns horizon 195 project.

The bottom sees the most abuse, so use the strongest filler you can. Fiberglass doesn't really dent though, so I'm curious what that really is. If it's just some factory imperfections then no big deal, but if something hit it and pushed it in then that's likely damage that needs fixed. Pics?

Not much interesting, but I spotted in 3 colors of flake today. Looks like I forgot to take a picture after I cleared it though.

Now that looks nice. I first read that as "dynamiting" the engine bay.

    Question on Lund Renegade

Google is showing me various designs for that, but Lunds are usually either under the floor or the rear casting deck. If it's the floor, the center section will have exposed screws so it can be pulled up for service.

That's even worse. The rubber will just trap moisture against the wood and make it rot faster. Do a layer of csm on the bottom of the floor and that will give you plenty of water protection. Or at least as much as all of the other wood anyway. Kept well it will last 20 years or more.

Yeah, I know the feeling. Pretty much every day for like 20 years or so. Just don't place too much importance on this being the thing that needs to go right. If it gets to be more than you expected, or you screw up and have to do something over, no big deal. Take a break for a bit, it'll still...

How long ago were the stringers and transom done? If the floor is rotten, they most likely they need redone too. You're in for a lot of grinding, get a tyvek with a hood and a full face respirator with P100 filters for dust and organic vapor filters for the resin fumes. Use the full face for...

82 Starcraft MR 180 floor, slight refit and leaks

Man, I haven't been getting any notifications for this thread. I just happened to see there was a new post under the Restoration section header. I clicked unwatch and set it to watch again. We'll see if that works.

Wow. Are you sure you want to take this on? Just getting the body and wood back in shape is probably going to run $20k easy.

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

Yes. Seal every bit of bare wood. You can leave it assembled to do it. It will soak in a bit, so let the first coat set for a bit, and do a second. You can see the dry spots pretty easily with some light. You could also use a layer of csm to help hold more resin. Brackets should be fine.

Why the high dollar plywood? You could just use some non treated 5/8 from lowes and put a layer of glass on each side for water protection.

    Seaswirl throttle removal

I haven't taken off a ton of throttles, but I'll try to be helpful. First, put it in neutral, take a picture and mark the position of the cables and brackets, then remove the cables. Often, the lever doesn't need to actually come off, so I would put that screw back in for now. Usually this...

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

Hmmm, maybe. It wouldn't give you much material for attaching hardware though, and you wouldn't be able to staple the upholstery to it. I would still suggest using a core material of some sort. Is the idea to not use wood to avoid rotting?

    Boats from work.

So, yesterday sucked. Turns out, I didn't put catalyst in my last cup of resin, and my last layer of mat was still wet. So I had to clean that mess up, and the other side started leaking water again. Supervisor helped me out on that one. He filled it with duraglas while I was cutting glass. So...

Man, I just bent mine today. My DA vibrated it off the swim platform and on to the ground. I haven't even had this one very long. They don't work well on wood though, you'll still need a 36 geit roloc or flap disc for that.

    Changing colour of gelcoat question

    1. There's some stuff called webbing solution. It's an additive that will make the gel lay out sort of stringy. Kind of like if you drizzled a brush over it. I haven't used it myself. 2. You can add sand into it to give it a rough texture when you spray it. It won't take much. 3. You can use...
