Carolina Skiff 198 DLV loose steering at steering wheel

Look under the dashboard. Rack and Pinon steering will have a long bar-shaped mechanism. Rotary steering will have a round steering mechanism.

Carolina Skiff 198 DLV loose steering at steering wheel

Gee, if that happened to me it would be the loose nut on the steering cable and behind the steering wheel. But that is just me!

Losing power on 2000 2 stroke Johnson 70hp

Is there a filter between the primer bulb and the carbs? Is it clean?

Losing power on 2000 2 stroke Johnson 70hp

Pump primer bulb at high speed and see if she will keep running. If so, it is likely a fuel pump or fuel line issue. My SeaRay I/O did that and it turned out to be a partially clogged filter on the fuel pickup.

Mecury BlackMax 175Hp, Constant Beep and Overheating

Those motors are not made to run without thermostats. Is the poppit valve working properly? It should open at about 2000RPM and allow a whole lot more cooling water thru the block. Put a torque wrench on the head bolts and check 'em for tightness. Sometimes they can get loose and allow...

1989 Johnson 50hp fuel pump fittings

You should be able to blow thru the fuel ports in one direction only due to the check valves. The port that allows air in obviously means fuel in as well. The pulse port will be sealed.

    Jet Drive Outboard Motor Debris

Jet drives (no matter what kind) are lower in efficiency than prop drive motors. i.e. a 105 Jet Power OB will have the block from a 150HP Prop drive. You might take that into account when choosing the power of the motor.

Winterizing a Merc A1-G1 Block Question Antifreeze

Lou, You probably know this, but for those lurkers that may not, aftermarket manifolds and risers are fine to use, but make sure the gasket between them is a good one. I had the green paper gasket that came with the Osco-brand products fail one day and the engine hydro locked, luckily with...

Winterizing a Merc A1-G1 Block Question Antifreeze

Lou, 20 years is a long time for risers and exhaust manifolds to last in salt water. You might slide the rubber sleeves off the risers and have a look at the risers. That is where they tend to rust away first.

Winterizing a Merc A1-G1 Block Question Antifreeze

Gee, Lou, In the spring I used to drain the antifreeze back into it's original containers and save if for next season. I saw no reason to dispose of it each year.

Old motors DEMAND to be retired when they are 65 years old..

If I remember correctly, the Vega cylinders were aluminum treated with silicon nitride. This made them very hard, but if the engine overheated the hardness was reduced and the cast iron rings would then wear down the cylinder walls. Later model Vega's had the iron duke engine to fix this issue.

    Need to reduce ventilation

I like the Turning Point Hustler props in aluminum. They are a bit higher performance than other brands but are about the same price. They are cupped. If your Solas prop has a removeable hub, you may be able to buy just a hub for the Mercury, for that prop. The Solas web site should show...

    2005 J115PXSOR new remote throttle

Generally, one would push the button in and hold it which disconnects the shifter mechanism. One can then advance the throttle in neutral. I would expect your engine to have the Coldstart feature which causes it to run at high idle, when cold. If you have that, and it is working, you will not...

    Need to reduce ventilation

Put a straight edge on the prop blades. The cup will be on the trailing edge of the blade, near where it joins the hub. Cupped props are more common, with non-cupped props the exception and are often quite old. Cupped props ventilate less. It is helpful to observe the A-V plate when on plane...

A nice tip but it’s not about stern drive storage in the up position

So this went from a "how to get the trailering clips off easy" to a how long do the PTT cylinder seals last? My point was that the PTT doesn't need trailering clips, unless you simply like the color of 'em. Bouncing down the road is less stress on the hydraulics than running across the water...
