125 HP outboard stiff steering @ high speed

Look for loose motor mounts. Under motor load at high speed, these can move and cause binding. Does trimming down make it better or worse?

    Finding a leak???

Boats flex when under power. That flex could open your seam more. Can you have someone drive the boat, while you look for the leak? You might try to mark it with a crayon or something that will write underwater.

    Marine Tex on Alodine?

So you want to put a stronger material (epoxy putty) over a weaker one(primer)? I cannot imagine that is a good idea. Suppose the primer peels? You can likely remove the primer with some acetone and a rag.

    MerCruiser update

Gee, storing 4 gal of antifreeze over the season is a drag. I am not storing 35 to 55 gallons of the stuff.

Force 125 Trim Motor working, but I think it should go higher

A couple of things. Most PTT systems have a trim limit switch. It can be adjusted to allow the trim up higher or down lower. Also, most PTT systems have a manual release valve. If you have one, make sure it is tight. If loose, the motor can usually drop. The crowleymarine site should have...

    MerCruiser update

Mike, I will guess that the single point drain feature started causing more freeze damage, due to clogs of rust in the drains. I say this because I had to poke the drains pretty thoroughly to get them to drain. If you simply open the single point drain, I would expect only partial drainage.

    MerCruiser update

If you have a raw water cooled sterndrive, rust will build up in the drains. When you go to drain the block and manifolds, you must dislodge the rust for proper drainage to occur. V-engines have 2 drains on the block and at least 2 on the manifolds. There is also the P/S cooler and the raw...

    MerControl Help Please

You should be able to reassemble no matter where the shift and throttle cables are set. Simply move the throttle arm until the "knobs" fit into the groove on the wheel shaped casting. Disconnect the cables at the engine if necessary. Watch out not to lose the small cylinder that helps hold...

    Trailer axle capacity/sizing

A trailer for a 3500# boat will need to have a larger capacity, as the trailer itself weighs 600-700#. When I looked at trailers 4 or so years ago, a trailer for a 3500# boat was usually dual axle, with a capacity of about 4400#. You might want to double check the weight capacity of your...

    Fuel Tank F Up

You motor will not have an issue puling fuel thru the larger dia fuel line. Replace the fuel line with the correct dia hose or get a proper reducer for the tank. Normally idle mixture needs to be set on the water under load. Flusher devices do not provide the backpresure or load of a water...

    Serial number means ...?

Watch for quality. You have an obscure motor with a regular maint item, and the only one who had it was from the PRC? It sounds fishy. As an example, I bought some spark plugs from the Chinese, and even though it was a sorta normal part, the spark plugs I got lasted 300 miles, until they...

    CHARGING QUESTION

That voltage is too high. Check the connections to the battery, as the battery functions as a voltage regulator, via it's load on the circuit.

    Serial number means ...?

Sears may still sell parts for that motor. You might check there. A lawn mower shop (if there are any left) may also be a source, due to the OEM playing mostly in the mower industry. Some of those motors had a balloon-like fuel pumps. You might see if you can source one of those, if necessary.

Any saving the engine? I’m devastated

Gee, I lost the thread. Why do you want to add tranny fluid, Kroll, pearl oil, Marvel Mystery oil or something to the fuel? At this point if there is any rust on the steel parts, the damage is done. Also, MMO is made to be burned, but I am not sure about the tranny fluid, Pearl Oil or...

Painting Prep for One part paint over gel coat

There used to be a paint product exactly for that purpose. It was dull dead grass or something like that, made by Pettit. It was likely enamel as polyurethane paint wasn't invented way back them. As for Brightside, the label will instruct that no primer is needed over gel coat in good...

    1979 70 hp choke issues

The carb shouldn't leak fuel, unless tilted up. I have not worked on those carbs, so I am not sure how the levers look. My sidebowl carbs have two levers, that work together to control the inlet needle. The straight one contacts the float, with the other one under it. Perhaps a service...

Adding A Stern Mounted Trim Switch

I assume the switch will be accessible when you are in the water, or standing next to the boat on it's trailer? If not, you should consider that, as that is the most often time I would use it. Any marine SPDT switch of at least 5A should work. $55 seems a bit high for a switch, but WM thinks...

What size Fuel Water Separator? 1998 Mercury Force 120 HP.

Gee, the metal water separator canisters do not rust in my speedboat, where everything else does. I have never had one collapse. Install them hand tight only. Using a tool on them scratches the paint, and then they can rust. Usually you can get them off by hand, but a std oil filter wrench...
