    1965 Johnson 6hp spark plugs

Can you not get J4C? They used to be readily available. Advanced auto parts stocks them, but I would think amazon does as well.

OK for the spark plug gap to be slightly off from recommended?

Gee, I used L-78V plugs in my '73 Merc 850. They are not new..... It looked like they had a slightly wider ground ring around the center electrode, compared to the BUHW or L-76V plugs.

    Switch box testing

All the IL6 motors with ADI ignition have 2 switchboxes. Try the CDI electronics web site. They used to have a switchbox test. In addition to the 2 switchboxes, your motor has 3 triggers, and two stator charge coils, one for low speed and the other for high speed operation. What cylinders...

    1992 XR6 150

Gee, push it with a finger towards the front or back, I forget which way. It just clips on the bottom and pivots on top. It doesn't seem secure, but it is.

OK for the spark plug gap to be slightly off from recommended?

As was said, surface gap plugs last a real long time. I have a set that I bought new 2 years ago. The ones in the motor are fine, so the new ones sit expectantly on the shelf. Actually, I only change them when the shells get rusty. I have never had one wear out.

OK for the spark plug gap to be slightly off from recommended?

Mark, do you have a listing for a conventional plug for a 1986 motor? I never saw one. Merc did specify conventional plugs for newer motors, however.

OK for the spark plug gap to be slightly off from recommended?

I do not think Mercury ever specified a conventional spark plug to replace a surface gap one, in your motor. I would stick with the surface gap plug. They look to be avail in lots of places.

    Ignition wire gauge?

Gee, I was able to solder a new wire to the female ign connector and solder it to the boat harness on my '77 Merc 1500. It lasted years. I drilled into the female quick connect plug from the rear and pushed out the female connecter, if memory serves. Of course it was probably 30 years ago.....

Unable to identify what lower unit rebuild kit to get.

That 0G number is your serial number. Punch it into the crowleymarine web site and it will give a year, model and parts list. If they have a seal kit it should be listed. If not, there are other parts places that you can look it up. Try ebasicpower, a sierra catalog or maybe iBoats.

2005 200hp Mercury Optimax Water in Gas

Optimax motors often have fuel filters, with water sensors mounted under the cowling. Did you empty/replace that one?

WARNING !! WARNING !! About brand new sparkplugs I bought.

Gee, it is standard practice to gap new conventional spark plugs, no? Iridium plug gaps are usually set at the factory, because they can be damaged if the used tries to set their gap.

    1979 70 hp choke issues

Do you mean "where does the ign killer wire from the ign switch go on the switchbox?" The ign killer wire on your motor was probably (I say probably as the wire colors changed about that time, say 1980) orange or salmon. The newer wire color is black/yellow. See which one you have and...

    1979 70 hp choke issues

I have never taken your exact model engine apart, so I am not familiar with the cowling, cowl support and other things having to do with engine configuration. Sorry.

    1979 70 hp choke issues

Clearly the PO was not well versed on the wiring of that motor. Disconnection of the killer wire, and a jumper on the starter solenoid (prop removed for safety) is all that is necessary to start the engine. On those MerControllers, the ign switch is soldered to the wiring harness. I would...

    1979 70 hp choke issues

When you say "kill switch at the switchbox", do you mean the mercury switch that kills the ign when the motor is tilted?

    Ignition wire gauge?

What was the original gauge? All the wires in the loom (harness) were the same, except for the battery cables. Check the ign wire at the quick disconnect plug. It should be the center one. They break there often. I was able to repair my ign wire at that point with some drilling to expose...

    1979 70 hp choke issues

A 1979 Merc should have one coil per cylinder. That will mean it has ADI ignition, which will generate spark w/o battery power. You would need to disconnect the black/yellow wire at the switchbox, as the ign key grounds that wire to kill the spark. Connect the battery to the battery cables...

    WOT Question

Your prop likely has too much pitch. You probably want a prop or 12P or so, but try consulting a dealer or prop selector. Unless the 'toons have some sort of rough coating like barnacles on them, I doubt speed with change much. 22MPH is pretty standard for 'toons.

    hard start after motor tilt

You do reprime the carbs after tilt down, right? Alot of carbs leak when tilted up.

    What To Get?

Well, 3 miles here in NJ is the limit that you can legally fish for Striped Bass. 3.1 miles and the Feds could get you. All kidding aside, if you are simply going for a ride, 3 miles is plenty far out. If it gets ugly, you can get back to shore is 10 minutes or so. If you want to fish at a...
