Any Wires/Connectors on it? A Serial/Model # would come very handy for looking up the Engine Info

    1981 50 HP 3 cylinder Mercury

In 1981, the 50hp was a 4 Cylinder. First Questions. How long have you owned this Motor? Was it running Fine Prior to the 5 Mph? What are the Numbers from a Compression Test? Can it make a Spark Strong enough to Jump a 3/8" Gap, on all Cylinders? Is Fuel getting to all the Carbs? Are the Carbs...

Air is actually a better than Foam as it is far Lighter, and was used for years, in Glass boats

    I have no prop

A 5.7 is pretty much the Perfect size for that Boat. I suggest an Enertia for a Prop.

A 2000 Rpm Drop from a 3 inch increase in Pitch? Is the New Prop cupped? Combined, that would account for about 800 rpm

Made it up to 6 today, but by next week the Highs will be -13. Fortunately we had very little snow, but the Morons at City Hall decided to use Salt instead of Plowing the Streets.

Propeller Recommendation - 1998 Mercury Force 50 HP

This pic shows you engine mounted pretty much even with the Hull Bottom which is normally the correct height, but yours as a lot of Aluminium Hulls do, has a protruding Keel directly in front of the Motor. Perhaps that is creating a less than solid supply of water to the Prop, causing...

So I am a Mean Hearted Soul because I posted a Pic in response to Airshot's Comment. As for Restrictions. Lakes are Regulated Federally, not Provincially or by Counties or Municipalities, which means only the Feds can ban Boats or impose a Speed or Horsepower Limit.(I had many a Discussion with...

Propeller Recommendation - 1998 Mercury Force 50 HP

Well the Prop Hub looks like it is the correct Diameter for your motor. Sorry to sound like a Broken Record, but the Tach is still suspect. What Setting on the Tach did you select?

Keep in mind, that a Boat, is a Hole in the Water that you will be continuously pouring Money into. BOAT, is also Acronym for 'Break Out Another Thousand'

So I became a proud boat owner today.

Interesting Angle that the Fuel Tanks sits at. The Supply fitting is on the High side, and since the Pickup Tube, is likely straight, a fair bit of Liquid, be it gasoline any likely water, are never removed from the Tank I imagine the Wood inside the Tubing that the Engine mounts to is rotted...

That looks like a Rubber Hub Prop, and the Face of the Prop where the Thrust Washer goes isn't worn away from a Slipping Hub\ Can you provide a couple Pics of the Prop on the Engine, One from the Side, and the other also at that height, but at a 45 Degree Angle looking toward the rear of the...
