Need guidance on Prop pitch and Power, 78 Johnson 55hp 55EL78S

Here is the OMC prop chart for your engine. A Dealer would have put a 15" on it. However, if the motor isn't up to Snuff, no prop is usable

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

So the Advance is coming in early enough. 14" inches is on the Low Side, but Back Pressure in the Exhaust might be a factor. Any Idea on the # of Hours this engine has on it? By your Name, I will assume you are in the Vancouver Area. Vancouver BC or Vancouver Washington? What altitude are you...

1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

Don't run it too much, cause if it isn't getting Fuel at low speeds, it isn't getting Oil, which becomes a real problem with a fast running Hot motor suddenly going to Low Speed

Prop makes clanking noise when put in gear.

I hope you aren't "Easing" it into gear. What is the Idle Speed, in gear and in neutral?

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

When you say Ignition Advance @3000rpm as 25. do you mean the Total Timing is 25 degrees, or the advance is 25 degrees for a Total of 37 degrees? 8400lbs, that is a lot of Boat. I wish I had my old Merc Accessory Catalogs, as they would give Hull Weights in the Prop Charts

Motor has no power under load

I agree with Scott regarding these Motors grenading when overrevved even a bit.

    40 hp johnson electric shift Model # 40ES 69R

That Oil is not for Electric Shift. Precision Blend is the correct Oil. Hopefully you go to a Dealer who knows about the Electric Shifts, as they have been out of Production since 1970

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

How bad does it smell, the drippings? Gear Oil stinks to High Heaven, while Oil that goes thru the Engine, will smell of Gas and Oil

Double Cup or not, on a pontoon?

Be prepared to be underwhelmed if you attempt a repitch. You are getting 5400 with the 13" Enertia, an 11 should put you at 5800. Enertia is a very good Prop, not cheap, but it is one of a very few that can deliver better Performance at the Top End, and also at Hole Shot. I got mine back in...

Double Cup or not, on a pontoon?

There isn't an Aluminium Prop made that can perform the same as an Enertia

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

The 65, 75, 80, and 85hp inline 4s had a 2.3:1 Ratio, and most inline 6 s, but not all, had a 2:1. In the mid 1980s the 2.3 was offered as a High Altitude Option on the 115 IL6.

1988 Force 125 HP outboard prop selection

Before you start messing with Props, is the Engine firing on all 4 cylinders? Do a compression test, post the numbers. Does it deliver a Spark that can jump a 3/8" gap at each cylinder? Are the carbs opening fully when the Go Go Lever is at Full Throttle?

1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

Do you have a Spark at Cylinders that can jump a 3/8" gap? Since the 2 lower Cylinders are affected, and they share a Carb, I would start there. Since it seems to run better above 3000 rpm, start by checking the Fuel Level, and all the Idle Circuits. Likely clogged with dirt/gum/varnish

Lower Unit Gear Oil Running Temp ?

When in use, the Gear Oil Temp is regulated by the Water the Motor is passing through. In most cases the Oil is 75-90 weight. Your plan is to drill it in the Skeg, and then seal it. So how are you getting the Info from the Sender? Wires sticking out are going to cause Turbulence, in front of the...

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

Full revs in Neutral means Eff all. The engine is not under Load. It is a great way to throw a Rod, due to the very high G-loads suddenly imposed on the Rods and Pistons. Did you check the Y Pipes and the Exhaust Bellows?
