Problem Restarting, Idling and Acceleration when the engine is warm. Merc 140hp 3.0 Alpha 1 Gen 1.

No need to re-engineer the fresh air system. Fan blows engine compartment air out one side, draws fresh in from the other. When you get moving, the vents take over the same function. Works for every other boat on the water

Cool river sightings 2 days ago...

Very cool. I've had them swim alongside the boat for miles heading to Block Island. This Spring, they were up deep in Narragansett Bay all the way in to Providence on the Rhode Island side, and up into the Taunton River on the Massachusetts side. Things seem to be changing yearly. Very...

    Best home generator?

Only because they're completely ignored until you need them. Out of sight out of mind

    Best home generator?

If I were to do it again or need to replace.. I would get propane, not gasoline. Too much trouble keeping it running with todays fuel issues. They dont get used enough IMO

    Are cheap carburetors good?

I bought an inexpensive Amazon alternator kit for my 3.7. Had to greatly massage it to get it to fit and run true. After 28 hours on the rebuilt motor the alternator self destructed. I just ordered a new kit from Breezeworks which is what I should have done to begin with. Going this route...

Is there a way to tell if the impeller is working?

Yeah, ditch it. How can you possibly submerge the outdrive above the rams when they would hit the top of any container and not allow it to go any deeper? Im confused

    My boat is being a boat . . .

That is why I still run my 3.7. Lol. I can run all day for $75 Back when I had my 392 Silverton with the twin gas guzzlers, it was no joke paying for fuel. My next boat will be a 23'ish center console with an outboard. As I get older, I just want to fish and have an easy time running and...

    My boat is being a boat . . .

Oh to have a problem that's as simple as a rad cap! 🤞

Is it possible to put the upper half of the sterndrive on first? Or do I need to put the whole drive on together?

Assemble it on a stand, vice, saw horse and 2x4s or whatever you have so you can pay attention to easily lining it up and mating the 2 halves properly. Doing this while upper is on the boat is a sure fire way of destroying the oil seal in the upper. (Ask me how I know) Turn shift shaft clockwise...

    Mercruiser Spark plug broken

I am in the habit of carrying a full compliment of tools on the boat. If I use a tool for a repair, I try to keep it onboard. Back when I raced motorcycles, I was always in the habit of only using the tools I carried in my pack for all repairs. That way if there was any failure, it could be...

Mercruiser 170 runs bad when hot - voltage regulator issue?

Yes, what Scott said. Make sure everything is up to par before you start just replacing parts. My advice is for replacing them if needed. But I can tell you, it probably should be upgraded before failure, because those regulators dont last forever. Im not so sure if they are still available...

Mercruiser 170 runs bad when hot - voltage regulator issue?

Probably a bad 40 year old regulator. I have upgraded to a alternator and Pertronix. Do yourself a favor and go with the Breezeworks alternator and keep the points system. The Pertronix is nice but when it fails, you will be stranded. The points, condensor, is servicable and probably wont quit...

Need Ideas/Advice/Removal of Broken Upper Vertical Shaft Bearing.

Yep, been there. Luckily my old outdrive came apart without too much stress. But I maintain and rebuild equipment at work that doesn't always cooperate. The boss always asks "how long", my answer is always the same, "I'll let you know when I'm done" 😂

Need Ideas/Advice/Removal of Broken Upper Vertical Shaft Bearing.

I rebuilt mine with a Harbor Freight press and bearing splitter. Now I have the tools for cheap money. I wouldn't buy them if I was making a living with them but they work just fine for occasional use

    Battery...

Make sure you check the health of the water pocket cover in the upper half of outdrive that the water tube goes into

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

Cuz I'm getting old and weak. I always find a way to tear them while manhandled the drive on. Need to invest in or build a stand

Engine Alignment tool goes in about 1/4 of the way, question.

I have switched to the Sierra instead of the Quicksilver. I find them more robust. I used to put a few dabs of grease on them to hold in place but found that it softens the material and tears easier. Now I just put them on dry and have much better luck
