    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

After much testing and tinkering, I figured a few things out on the Evinrude. 1) The fuel line connection at the fuel connector was loose (not sufficiently clamped), which allowed air to get into the fuel line. A hose clamp did the trick. 2) The fuel connector at the engine also seems to...

    Can You Wear This Shirt

I had one of those things (Slide Rule) as a freshman in college . . . within a few years, it was all scientific calculators.

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

I ran the Evinrude some more today (with oars in hand) . . . definitely a fuel starvation issue. I brought the motor back to the house to run it in the test tank. I replaced sections of fuel line with clear lines so I could see what is going on. Essentially, the fuel is draining back through...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

As for the Mercury . . . I came across a tidbit of info somewhere (can't quite recall) that these isolator blocks (basically non-conductive mounting studs for the maker points) can/do develop cracks which allow the spark to jump to the housing rather than the spark plug. . I'm not sure if that...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Yes, I got my Johnson 4.5 HP sorted out a few years back, and I think this motor (Evinrude) will take the same. It did play a trick on me yesterday on the way out to the big boat. Crapped out from fuel starvation. Not sure what happened, but the fuel line lost its prime. It took some time to...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Here is my handy work, saving about $100. These wires have threaded studs soldered on one end and the ring connector on the other. They connect the maker points to the the '-' side of the coils. . . I did not have the OEM brown & white color wiring, so red (brown) and yellow (white) will have...

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Quick update . . . The Evinrude is now on the dinghy as is working fine. Not as smooth a runner as the Mercury, but it runs and has decent power. As for the Mercury . . . I started replacing wires . . . lots of brittle crumbly. I dis-assembled the stator and tested the ignition module plate...

What is this reservoir for? Coolant? Where does the line run to?

It would be best to post a picture in this thread. (use the 'Attach Files' button). I did not see an image over on Reddit. Free boats can be very expensive. It is hard to say what that line/tube is without seeing it. Sound like drive lube reservoir though . . .

    Water in the Lower Unit

Yes, the short amount of time seems rather quick. You got the drive shaft seal and prop shaft seal . . . Might be another. The pressure test will tell the story ( as mentioned, not much pressure is needed)

    I Got Me a Mercury !!!

Quick update . . . I pulled the Mercury back to my house and began to disassemble the ignition system. It probably will take a week or 2 to go through everything and make it all good. As a stop-gap measure, I picked up this 6 HP Evinrude to use while the Merc is 'under the knife'. Some guy...

    Water in the Lower Unit

Looks like Merc's High Performance gear lube . . . Emerald in color. Next steps are a pressure test of the LU. New seals may be in your future.

    Bilge Pump -Auto or???

Automatic in the sense that it has a float switch to turn the pump on as needed . . . Yes, most/all boats have them. What is the nature of your question?

    Water leak

The thing about leaks is you have to look for them. Lots of places to look as have been described. Use your cell phone as needed to see where your eyes can't reach.

Should I pull heads for inspection, 5.7 liter

Another of the millions of uses for duct tape. . . I usually mark the 90˚ points with a small piece of tape, so I can rotate the engine according to those marks. You just try to be as accurate as you can with placing the tape on the balancer/pulley.

    Coupler alignment

Towards . . . You will also want to rotate the engine at 90˚ intervals to see if there is any difference. I usually try to get the sideways alignment dialed in before I do the up & down alignment. I never liked the way the I/O engines have their alignment set-up.

    Motor Replacement

It may take a while to find a used motor that matches the brand, HP, and model year. You can probably go +/- a few years and still have compatibility with your controls. Some folks sell used motors with the controls, so that may also be an option. Don't expect it to be quick though . . . If...
