    Lake Ontario

Any boats that lay in a slip all summer will eventually have wood rot. Boats that are trailered and kept under cover when not in use will have far less of a problem. The big exception is the Boston Whaler. Those rigs are exceptional in quality.

    Lake Ontario

I have fished Lake Ontario weekly for the past 25 years. I started with a 17 footer which is fine for nice sunny days. From there I went up to an 18 footer. These boats usually have a much higher gunnel and lay a bit deeper in the water, next was a 19 foot Starcraft Islander and now a 22 footer...

I am starting to believe some of the global warming in N J.

Roscoe, with all due respect, but Lake Michigan does not have the arctic and antarctic melt off flow into it. Also the water in Lake Michigan streams out of it toward the lower lakes and finally the Ocean. On the other hand, the oceans are the final destination of water and there is no down...

    Telltale on lower unit?

I still say not normal. If it is just a drizzle, sure, that would be normal, but when it "shoots out a steady stream" that is not normal. It would mean that the exhaust housing is full of water and that it is pressurized enough to shoot out a steady stream. That water should have flown freely...

    Telltale on lower unit?

No this is not normal. It's not the hole that worries me. It's the water coming out. There are a few potential problems. It may be that the pipe above the impeller (partially) popped of and spouts the water around in the lower unit housing specially when your muffs are blasting full force, or...

    Nobody fishing?

Uhh Yes. I was playing with some tuna that were under the dolphins.

This happened today, and in the blistering heat.

I replaced the wood in my boat with a piece of aluminum. i went to a metal store and from the leftover pile I pulled out out a 2 inch thick end piece. One inch thick would probably have been thick enough. It cost me about 5 bucks. Next I pulled the mostly rotten piece of wood out and cut a copy...

    4.3 liter 1989 Cobra problem

I replaced the lower shift cable. It was easier than I expected. The engine end is leaving me with a question. The cable was sent with some tools. One to keep the lower end in position and one tool that is supposed to show the exact distance between the front end hole and the position of the...

Thank you so much for your answers. I will work on these problems one by one.

    4.3 liter 1989 Cobra problem

I finally had a chance to go fishing in my restored Islander with the 4.3 liter rebuilt engine. Everything went great but in the middle of the day, after I started the engine, it would stall upon shifting forward. When I would push the accelerator forward fast, there would not be a problem and I...

    Penn downrigger power supply cables

You are right and I took your advice. I went with a garmin reactor 40 with GHC 50. It cost me an arm and a leg, but I am told that burial shrouds do not have pockets.

Kicker remote control steering and speed.

When trolling for salmon I often need to make very small adjustments to speed and direction because of side wind and under water currents. I bought a Powrtran tailfin wireless setup to control steering, but decided to another way because it only controls direction. Next I bought the panther...

    Penn downrigger power supply cables

Thank you, I am quite aware of that, but I have looked all over the place to find them and they are almost impossible to find. This is sort of a last resort thing. Besides, I am looking for information, not for bids and offers.

    Penn downrigger power supply cables

Currently I hooked up cannon cables and they work fine, but in this case I would like to go original all the way, partly because it looks neater and partly because I fish solo 99% of the time and being able to raise and lower the riggers from the the dashboard makes it a bit easier.

    Penn downrigger power supply cables

I am restoring my Starcraft Islander and I am almost done. I also want to install the Penn Electric downriggers that were on there originally. I have 4 good working 800s. What I need are two sets of power cables. 2 from rigger to boat and the 2 female ones that go to the power source. If you...

4.3l mercruiser no start when hot

What about the fuel pump? You stated that you only run it on the muffs at low rpm so you might not have noticed, but possibly the pump is bad and does not get enough fuel in the carburetor.

4.3l mercruiser no start when hot

It sounds to me that the fuel level in the carburetor is being drawn down by the engine running and when you try to start there is no fuel available. What happens if you try to push to full gas a couple of times before trying to start? And what happens if you allow the engine, when hot, to run...

Restoring a trailer vs replacing a trailer

There is one thing that may help you. If you know whether your axle set is for instance 3500 pounds, your guess becomes a lot more educated

Restoring a trailer vs replacing a trailer

If you pull the bearing just clean it off a bit and you will see some numbers on the side. Those numbers will tell you what size the bearing is.
