Delco EST conversion kit timing problem

This is about a 1989 4.3 liter OMC Cobra ignition conversion from points to EST distributor Conversion Kit. I have changed from points to est on several engines and in the case of the 4.3 liter you have to start the engine, let it warm up and then connect the base timing tool too a positive 12...

    E/J 9.5 pump head

Quite a lift indeed, but that would mean a lack of fuel, which would cause the engine to rev up before conking out, what he describes is the engine slowing down and dying which points to a lack of air.

    E/J 9.5 pump head

Just for fun, take off the engine cover and see if the problem goes away. If it does go away ,your problem would be a lack of air, possibly caused by exhaust fumes filling up the area under the cowel. It might mean that you have an exhaust leak coming from a leaking exhaust cover

    Mystery trim/tilt motor

Lots of Mercruisers with Alpha 1 lower units used that type of tilt and trim motor. I have one on a 1984 3 liter mercruiser and one on a 1989 4.3 liter OMC cobra. They work just fine.

    Bilge pump wiring

You mentioned a perko switch. when that is turned to zero your bilge pump will not work. It does not matter if your boat sits on a trailer when not in use. If you you have your boat in a slip it is a better idea to have the automatic part hooked straight to the barttery.

Where to get alternator for Mercruiser?

There are a ton of cheapo made in China mercruiser alternators on the market. They are not what you want. I made the mistake of buying cheap and a year later, it konked out on me. The bearing were completely worn out. You should go to your local repair shop and have them look at the old one...

rpm signal wire and est ignition

The dedicated wire cleared up the problems. As for the Artilaura tach gauge,.. I should have stuck with Faria.

rpm signal wire and est ignition

That's how I had the old analog rpm gauge hooked up and it worked fine, with this new one it goes straight to 6000 rpm the moment I start the engine. I'll hook up a dedicated wire and check if the wiring is alright. It's just that the directions are to connect the rpm signal wire to the negative...

rpm signal wire and est ignition

I am rebuilding the dashboard on my Islander and bought an Artilaura rpm gauge. The directions say to connect the rpm signal wire to the negative side of the coil.I have an AC Delco est ignition and coil. I have no good idea where the negative side of the est coil is. Any help is appreciated ...

1989 Starcraft Islander 221 (4.3 Liter) doghouse rebuild.

I have just about finished the complete overhaul of my Islander , but I have no idea about fixing the doghouse. Does anybody have some pointers to rebuild that doghouse? If possible with measurements and/or pictures. As always, thank you very much for your opinions and advice. Cornelis

    Charging problem

you do not mention the RPM you are running it on now, but a rectifier on a 2 cylinder 48 horse will give a good charge from 1800 rpm on. 14 volt is really good for a rectifier.

    Evinrude 25 - Part Missing

On the top of the johnson evinrude forum there is a sticky that has boating salvage yards. Try and call some of them. They have a lot of good stuff. It is not just the plastic housing. It should come with a couple of bolts and (very important) a round foam like washer that helps it fit onto the...

The silencer is important. Maybe not so much for the engine performance, but having it makes conversation on the boat a lot more pleasant

Johnson 1980 9.9 lower unit leaking oil out of small hole

The oil you see is most probably a mix of exhaust and water. The hole you see is made in there to drain the gunk that tends to build up in the exhaust housing specially when the engine runs at a low rpm. Just to make sure, do the smell test. Open your lower unit gear drain just enough to drain...

    does anyone know?

What you see there is a petcock. It is a drain plug that is in there so you can drain the manifold for winterizing. I would take it out all the way and take a piece of bend wire to make sure there is no muck above it . It either was not tightly closed or the rust and muck sort of plugged it up...

    Evinrude 9.9 Overheating

The compression seems to be low. quite possibly the overheating did a job on the block or the head. 200 degrees is quite hot. My guess is that it will need a rebuild.
