    Outdrive oil leak..

A good chance the seals in the lower area of the drive shaft housing is the leak. Drop the lower, if there is oil on the vertical shaft then that is the leak. There is a lower seal that usually comes apart exposing the upper seal area, since the lower gear extension is plain steel it will be...

    Timing Too Advanced

Take a close look at the starter where there should be a bracket that connects the field frame to the engine block. If there is no bracket then it was left off when the engine was replaced. 3.0s vibrate and if the bracket is not there the starter drive will make a lot of noise inside it’s...

    OMC 800 stringer

With the triangular cover removed and If the drive is either full up or partially at 1/2 way you can push the plug and worm gear out. This way you will be able to grab the shaft and pull it out enough to release the coupling. There should be a thin plastic washer forward of the worm gear. If...

    Overheated Weirdness

Do this test without the engine running. Locate the hose that goes to the port exhaust riser, disconnect it at the thermostat housing then connect a garden hose to it. This will tell if the riser is causing the problem. The water should flow freely, if not or if the hose to the riser starts...

Trim issues, torn wires, many mistakes

Test the “up” solenoid with a test light. It will be the one with the blue wires. Those small style solenoids always give trouble. Have someone hold the trim up switch and probe both sides with the larger the nuts. You will see that the current is not going through to the motor side.

    Sea Ray 1977 200SR

There may be an internal crack on the starboard side of the block below the intake manifold. Most times the head does not. I recently purchased a 94 F 150 with a cracked 302. I located a rebuildable 351 for $300.00 and rebuilt it. In my 30 plus years as a stern drive shop I never reused...

    Tilt/Trim

Have you tried jumping over the solenoids? This test will determine whether the solenoids or the motor itself. Those small solenoids are not as good as the earlier large ones and are mostly the problem. If the solenoids are not the problem then the brushes are stuck in the motor. It is not...

    Sea Ray 1977 200SR

Sierra Marine has replacement manifold parts. While your original manifolds are rear riser style the center riser replacement type will require a 90* elbow to connect to the exhaust “Y” pipe. Look at the sides of the block at the core plugs, sometimes they will come out in a freeze without...

    Mercontrol cables

You better check on the dimension of a concealed side mount first. There might not be enough room between the inner Gunnal and the inner panel. The 2 parts that wear in the white control box may still be available.

    Mystery Outdrive Gear Oil Leak

The extension of the lower gear is made of steel. If the lower seal should fail then water will cause the steel to rust and the extension will get pitted which will cause the seal to leak. Try doing what I suggested in post # 4 first. If oil leaks then you now know what to do.

    Mystery Outdrive Gear Oil Leak

Most likely the shaft seal surface on the lower gear in the upper gear housing is the problem. Refill the drive with it tilted then remove the lower and plug the oil transfer port. Let it set and watch if oil leaks again. If so then look up into the upper and you will see oil dripping from...

    Bogging in relation to distributor

Have you ever tried just replacing the rotor when it starts to lose power? Rotors will go to ground when hot and the symptom you are describing is how a marine engine acts when that happens. Do you have electronic or breaker point ignition?
