    Fuel Carburater Question

Was the carburetor a marine version? If it was an automotive type then #1 it is not safe and #2 it is too lean. Marine carburetors are designed so that if it “floods over” the gas stays inside the throttle body and not out and all over the engine which will cause a fire.

    1972 Grew SS245

Original type “C” oil was made from whale oil. Around 73 when OMC discontinued using it.

    1972 Grew SS245

Obviously the original owner converted to a crankshaft driven raw water pump. The flush cap needs to be left off so that water can circulate through the drive to cool the gear oil. Just change the oil in the lower, you can use automatic transmission fluid as a substitute. Resealing the lower...

    1972 Grew SS245

I had a few customers with the exact boat engine combination. Down here in Louisiana the salt water use took a toll on the engine/drives. However the hulls held up. With fresh water use the the engine /drive is probably still usable. The biggest problem with any drive system is the owner’s...

OMC Cobra 5.7 gear shifting engine stumble, pop and smoke

Your electric fuel pump should be wired through a oil pressure safety switch. The pump should only operate when the engine is running so that if the engine stops due to the carburetor flooding over it could cause a fire. Good job however on the other issues.

    Mercruiser 233 Overheating--Out of Ideas

What you were seeing was a leaking head gasket. The combustion gas escaping was overcoming the incoming water pressure. A compression test very seldom will show which cylinder is causing the problem unless the gasket is completely blown out. Even after the heads are pulled you probably will...

Did research re slow trim tilt but…

ARCO marine # TR 217 should be the commutator head with the brushes snd springs. I hope you still have the small ball bearing that sits in the end of the armature to keep it engaged in the pump. To hold the brushes in place cut a 6” length of coat hanger wire then bend it into a “V” using it...

Can you use 2 stoke oil in a prestolite, trim pump?

Power steering fluid is also a good choice. Keep in mind that it does not foam and has less drag on the trim motor allowing the drive to move quicker up and down.

    Outdrive seal 12 hole

Your transom seal is the round one which is NLA so you will need the 313080 OMC # or 18-2767 Sierra. The 313081 support ring is NLA. You will have to fabricate one from some aluminum 1/8” X 3/4” flat stock. Also the stainless worm clamp is NLA so be careful not to over tighten it or you will...

Did research re slow trim tilt but…

Just for kicks, how about running a #10 ground wire from the battery to the stud just above where the solenoid bracket is. I am sure that cleaning the terminals would help but from the looks of the rust things will start breaking.

MC-1 transom + cork gasket, to seal or not to seal?

2X with Bondo as that is what sealing the inside holes will prevent.

MC-1 transom + cork gasket, to seal or not to seal?

In the event that bilge water should get high enough to enter the lower mounting bolt holes then galvanic action will begin to eat up the anodic lower bolts and the studs. I have seen enough of that where the lower studs were almost eaten away. That is when the outer transom gasket starts to...

    Ignition Issue

Check if there is 12 volts at the +/bat side of the coil when cranking, you may either have a bad “bypass” circuit from the main starter solenoid or it is not connected. It is the purple wire on the outboard side of the solenoid.

    Ignition Issue

Take a small screwdriver and gently spread each pin in the cannon plug. Sometimes that can cause the problem. Also check that the shift interrupter is wired correctly or that it is not in the triggered position.

89 Volvo Penta AQ271C ignition or carb, maybe something else

As Lou said you need to check the voltage on the + or bat side of the coil. There should be 12 volts or slightly more with the engine running. Just considering the age of the Petronics system if it was my boat I would have a spare so maybe you should try replacing the original one and keep the...

Leaving Tampa, Osprey, Fort Myers ? ?

I hope all you Florida guys made out without too much damage. I can feel your pain as the southeast and west parts of Louisiana caught a few bad ones in the past. A whole house generator came in real handy for me last year.
