Big day for 4.3 LX, full tune, compression, intermittent start problem solved and new thermostat.

Greetings . . . Here are my comments to some of the issues. . . T-stat bolt - helix coil could fix stripped threads if it comes down to that. See if the bolt is too short first, then go from there. T-stat - Oddly enough . . . there are 2 cooling system designs for that engine, and your...

homebuilders / construction guys lend me your ear

I happen to be replacing the decking on my deck this weekend . . . Of course it is not up in the air and I have a flush girder, since it is so close to the ground. . . I built this 28 years ago and the framing looks fine. So it will be just the deck boards, of which I have 48 16 foot PVC...

I think 9' is too much of a span for the girder. . . and you would not have continuity of the girder at the middle column. If you go with a 4th column, then you can make a 6' span and splice accordingly. Not sure how many ply of 2x8's, but if you go with 3 2x8's (12 footers) it may be better...

    Bi-annual Compression Test - Merc 7.4 MPI

I also found (in 2018) that the test gauge that I was using was reading 10 psi low. I was initially concerned that the psi had dropped so much in a couple year's time. When I found out it was the gauge, then it did not seem so bad. Here are a couple of graphs of my 2 engines compression over...

    Bi-annual Compression Test - Merc 7.4 MPI

I reminded myself yesterday why I don't do compression tests on my twin engines, but every 2 years  The engines are so close together that is makes the 'inside rows' of cylinders nearly impossible to reach. 4 hours to do both engines. Anyway, here are the results of the one I did in...

    Pending Forum Software Upgrade

As an IT guy, I am looking forward to the forum upgrade over the next few days. Change is good :) The announcement that I assume everyone has seen does a nice job in explaining the rationale and timing. Just wondering if the site admins can share more of the techy details of the upgrade...

    Top Speed Of Our Boat?

The Quicksilver stuff will tend to clean the carburetor and the combustion chamber. It may help the engine, but will not cure 3 year old gasoline. You might notice some smoke out of the exhaust, but 1 or 2 bottles on a 1/2 tank is not that much, so the effect should be slow and mild. It is...

    Top Speed Of Our Boat?

I'm just saying :D Is this what we are talking about? A boat like this? . . Big question . . . how fast did this boat go previously? (sorry if that...

Mercruiser 7.4 LX MPI Won't Start - No Sparky

The manual that covers my engine is #16 . . . but it does not cover the HEI/EST distributor much, if at all. Probably because it is the first year of MEFI :noidea: Which manual are you referencing? Manual #23 seems to cover the ignition system that I have, but is for the newer engines . . ...

    Broken tiller mount 9.8

It takes a bit of work to dis-assemble the saddle from the main part of the engine, usually because the aluminum/rubber mounts are corroded a bit. PB Blaster and some heat on the 'ring of the saddle assembly may loosen them. .
