    Another possibility could be the rubber ring that seals the upper driveshaft housing to the inside of the bell housing. If the ring was not glued in or was pulled down when the drive was installed.

    Where the quadrant gear is mounted on the upper gear case does it look like that area is cracked or has been welded ? Can the small gear be moved up and down as if the housing is worn where the shaft comes through?

    One other thing, be sure to replace the starter drive since it may have caused your problem. Be sure to get a new one and not one that was rebuilt.

    The ring gear is replaceable. NAPA stocks the ring gear, just count the teeth. It is easy to knock the damaged one off with a brass drift and a suitable hammer. You heat the replacement in your stove and it will drop on and shrink itself out tighten up.
