    Comparison of Boats for Sale

The stringers are aluminum. If you have rotten innards, a piece of plywood will fix the problem. Repairing a rotten fiberglass boat of that age will cost many thousands and probably require a professional to do the work. While I agree that an outboard is also the way to go, older 2-strokes...

    Retractable sun shade

Not to be a naysayer, but a "shade" like that would not fit my requirements. We boated in the sun for many years. Then, after our firstborn the wife found out she could not sit in the sun anymore. Years later and when basil cell took over it became more mandatory. We boated with convertible...

    Comparison of Boats for Sale

That's the answer. Regardless of what the link says, Seaswirl was only an OK boat. Bayliners of that era were crap. The Johnny on the Seaswirl was a very good motor. But at that age it will need service at some time. Parts are available, but you will search far and wide to find a mechanic...

    60's Glasron boat

You will never be able to locate that part. It would have to be custom made. The cost would be many times more than the boat is worth. Those boats performed very poorly back in the day. That's why it's sitting there unused.

    1985 Carver Convertible

You inherited it, so you have no stake in it nor any capital. No loss for you any way you look at it. Go on NADA and look up what it would be worth. That's your base number. Donate it to some charitable organization that accepts boats. They will sell it and make a profit, to give to poor...

need liability insurance for 1977 stardust cruiser, i park it in a slip at the lake, it has a steel hull

I DO have an umbrella and the requirements are very stringent. They require a certain minimum liability for all your other policies, including house, cars, boats, etc. If you have an uninsured boat, or it is only insured for minimum liability, they won't write an umbrella. Insurance is a...

    Winch post on boat trailer

It looks like a custom built trailer, and it also looks to have been extremely well built. It also looks like a pretty big boat. That said, winching it on must be a chore, thus backing in too far is the logical approach. The second observation is that all of the gear is welded on, with no way...

    Winch post on boat trailer

I might buy one, but I wouldn't use it. If it was a used boat I would replace the winch post with a heavy duty model and set it up myself to be perfectly straight. In fact I have done that twice over my years of boating. If it was a new boat, I would require the dealer to repair it. Truth...

    Winch post on boat trailer

Most boats have strakes or keels on the bottom. The common setup is to position the bunks or rollers right next to them. Thus, it has to self-center. On my current 2 boats I added self centering keel rollers and that has made a perfect load and launch. But my trailer crossmembers were suited...

need liability insurance for 1977 stardust cruiser, i park it in a slip at the lake, it has a steel hull

Agreed value is usually higher than "book value" because of exceptional condition and/or uniqueness of the item. As such, you're gonna pay a premium for the coverage. Regardless, we're simply talking about liability here, so it's a different ballgame.

    First time boat owner

Before you even look at the motor, look at the hull. If the boat is also a 1974, it would be quite unusual for the hull to be solid. Boats weren't built that long-lasting back then. You need to enlist a local friend to help you do an inspection. A professional survey will cost big bucks...

    Project Boat

We have to apologize for suggesting expensive alternatives. Your initial post indicated "not limited to any monetary concerns", thus we were directed toward your other requirements. A 32 year old boat, no matter what condition it is in, is most likely not going to be a "cost effective...

need liability insurance for 1977 stardust cruiser, i park it in a slip at the lake, it has a steel hull

In my 50 years of home ownership I have only had 3 different insurance companies. They all had the same requirement for boat liability on a HO policy - max 25Hp and / or 30 mph max. boat speed. As such, my little tinny and my classic Lyman are carried on the HO policy. The other boats have...

need liability insurance for 1977 stardust cruiser, i park it in a slip at the lake, it has a steel hull

Most homeowners policies will only cover small boats with low HP and limited speed potential. Then, you need specific marine insurance. Some marine insurance companies will give you cheap rates for a new boat, and then raise the rate drastically when the boat is over 10 years old. ALL...

    Engine hour gauge

Back in the 1980's I bought a brand new boat and it didn't have an hour meter. Before I ever launched it I installed one off the ignition switch. I can't remember, but I believe it was a Sierra brand. It was still working 35 years later when I sold the boat. The radio and other accessories...

    Steering Wheel for Tiller Boat?

That's one approach, I guess. To me, ADDING weight to an already slow boat is what I personally would avoid. I'd love to find that elusive folding outboard. As an outboard collector I actually DO have one, but the cases are hard to find. If you DID find one it would likely be worth more than...

2019 Sea Doo Fish Pro Wear Ring (small marks)

The wear ring doesn't look that bad. I would be more worried about the corrosion on the shaft and impeller. I have never seen one that looked that bad. (or is it something other than corrosion?) Of course, I'm in fresh water.

    Bunk material and paint

I had a Starcraft with a factory baked on enamel. That finish was certainly more durable than anything that was applied after-market. That said, the carpeted bunks eventually wore off the finish. Adding bunk slicks made launching and retrieving more difficult. I don't know why because they...

    Impeller replacement schedule

I know I'll get flak, but I'll go ahead anyway. Our vacation boat had a 1970 9.5 Evinrude and I replaced the impeller in 1986 when I bought the boat. I took the motor out of routine service in 2009 and it still was pumping well. Only a few trips since then and all was still good. My 1984...
