    40hp 1980s Johnson Value

Its worth maybe $800, but only if it is a confirmed fresh water motor. If it saw salt water, its worth almost nothing. I'm speaking strictly about my area. Regardless, depending on where you live, you might be hard put to find someone to work on it. Parts are available, but not mechanics...

Do older aluminum boats have the same issues with waterlogged foam?

Transoms rot because the boats are sitting out in the elements. My tinny was pristine for 20+ years. Four years in the back yard and the transom was shot.

Just bought this pontoon from dealer, got home with no straps on back !

A safety chain will catch the boat as it is catapulting off the trailer. Just hope its strong enough. Better than nothing. A bow tie down will keep the boat on the trailer.

Just bought this pontoon from dealer, got home with no straps on back !

Don't show me any of those pics or videos. I couldn't take it! My personal story was standing at a red light waiting for the signal to change. It was 12 noon on a sunny Sunday. I was in a convertible with the top down, and my prized boat was in tow. The drunk with no insurance hit me from...

Transducer mounting - with a kicker on the starboard

Pardon my comment. It was not meant to offend. YOU were the one that said bubblegum, not me. For a welded aluminum hull, the look of the weld is what I would expect. It looked neat and proper. Frankly I was surprised that YOU shamed the weld in the first place. To me, OEM means it came...

Transducer mounting - with a kicker on the starboard

Don't look at other manuals. Look at the one for your very transducer. I DID look it up. It has a 180 degree beam, so simply mount it on your existing bracket temporarily and look at the geometry. Just by your pictures, it looks like if the kicker is a problem the main will be as well...

Transducer mounting - with a kicker on the starboard

What I saw in the picture was a bracket on the transom that was an OEM design. My Whaler also has a Raymarine and it was factory mounted in the same place as yours. It IS a side scan (you didn't say whether yours was or not). I also installed a kicker in the same place as yours. Obviously...

Does EFI solve the hard start/cranking issue?

I agree. But I left the DIY world when I retired. I have a bunch of oldies that i tinker with and run on hot Summer days, or out to the antique show. But when I HAVE to go fishing or take the family out for a Sunday cruise, I'll stick with the new stuff. If there is an issue, my local dealer...

Does EFI solve the hard start/cranking issue?

You're right. But as an old buddy said often: "I didn't buy a boat to save money". I believe in general, the EFIs run longer before repairs are needed. In the interim, not much to do. Remember points and plugs? But of course, anything can go wrong. In the olden days, it may have been a...

Does EFI solve the hard start/cranking issue?

I live in the north. My boats are idle ~6 months of the year. In olden days I used to pull out the hose and muffs and start her up in the driveway before heading to the launch ramp. Just to be sure. Now with EFI and 4-stroke, I simply put her in the water and even sitting all Winter she...

    I cannot find the right U bolts (1/2 x 4 x 3.5) anywhere

If Fastenall doesn't have it, they are not made. If you don't have a local store, go online. I have done some custom projects and NEVER failed to find it there.

What is Transom Height for 2006 Bayliner 185 Boat

Get a tape measure. 30 seconds and you'll have the correct answer. Finding specs on old boats like that will probably take longer.

Transducer mounting - with a kicker on the starboard

I don't have a definitive answer to your question, but my gut feeling is that the stbd mount will be OK. Problems with depth finder readings usually occur at high speed. In your case, when at plane the kicker will be out of the water. When at trolling speeds my guess is that there should not...

    Anchor line/rode size

There are Boatmen, and there are Boaters, and there are guys who just own a boat. In the latter case, many don't carry insurance nor take boating courses, so they are some of the problems on the water. A real boater takes pride in his equipment and strives to learn new things about the sport...

    Anchor line/rode size

I apologize for my sarcasm. I am often reminded by comments made by an old salt who was a retired Naval Officer and had served in combat in more than one war. When you said rope to him in reference to something remotely associated with a boat, his eyes would turn red. And of course the only...

    Launching/retrieving with FWD

I personally launched a retrieved 3000 # boats with a full perimeter frame "land yacht" "car" with a big V8 and RWD. No Problem. The next FWD vehicle sucked. Current AWD CUVs are the best ever. But they all have a capaity far exceeding the requirement. You have the needed vehicle.

    Anchor line/rode size

First of all, never buy rope for an anchor. You need line. For your size boat and bottom type, a 3/8" braided nylon line is what you need. A 4-6" rubber coated chain added to the rode should be fine. Personally, I find navy anchors work OK on my 14 foot tinny, but for your boat I would use...

How to Keep my Outdrive Looking Good

An up outdrive won't help because its still under water. Besides, if you have any issues with any of the bellows, leaving it up will exacerbate the leak and the boat might sink. Pull the boat weekly, clean it with a calcium solvent, wipe dry and wax it again. It won't look as god as in your...

Keeping boat interior (carpeting / fabric) "nice"

Our boats are all garage kept and always dry, so mold is never a problem. Our RV is kept outdoors. Last Summer it was unusually wet and we had massive mold every time we used the trailer. We used bleach several times and it always came back. Then, I switched to a specialty product...
