2005 Mariner 60 hp 2 stroke bigfoot knocking noise

When is the last time you changed the lower unit (gearbox) oil? When you did, what color was the oil? Did it have any bubbles (containing water). If it had been sitting vertically for over 24 hours, did water come out first when you pulled the drain plug? Do you know that your oil pump is...

    Mercury motor swap

If you are commenting on my reply, he asked about the controller. I had an 850 with PTT and it had the pistons out on the brackets where Merc. first put shocks and are completely different from newer units with tilt and trim rams tucked between the transom clamp brackets. I don't recall the...

    Mercury 2004 90hp 2 stroke compression

The Loopers use wedge shaped pistons that expand under the compression produced when the fuel air mixture explodes in the cylinder. If the rings aren't free to move and produce the designed sealing function, your compression will be low. Sea Foam is available everywhere in the 16 oz can for...

    Mercury motor swap

Depending on the pitch of your transom, Trim positions are self limiting. Tucking in, the mechanical parts of the engine set the limit. Pushing out, when the prop starts ventilating, due to being too close to the surface, your speed will drop and RPMs increase....alerting you that you are as...

    XR4 Blackmax 150 - can't find a prop to fit

I have a Ballistic SS 13 ¼ x 24, 15 tooth spline I was running on my stock 90 ELPT when I snapped the picture in my avatar. So high pitches are out there....iboats sells Ballistic.

    What Pitch To Buy

Other thing is like kind. If you change suppliers, models, or materials, you throw an unknown into the mix.

    1992 Bayliner Cuddy 3.0 Mercruiser

To tell you the truth, I did this restoration over 30 years ago best I can WAG. I didn't have to do much if any mechanic work to my boats of the day other than with this restoration mentioned. I know I didn't change the aluminum prop and just used what was on it. Don't recall any instrument...

    1992 Bayliner Cuddy 3.0 Mercruiser

I didn't keep track of the cu. ins in the little I4 Mercruiser engines. So that explains part of the difference in thrust.

    1992 Bayliner Cuddy 3.0 Mercruiser

You said 140. I guess 30 hp and PT does make a difference. Mine was a 1965 with 110 and no trim.

1988 Merc 200 HP Smoking during warmup.

Well sir I know The Merc and Penn. P.P., sitting on the shelf at Wallyworld adjacent to one another are rated TCW-3 so that eliminated them from your list of not to worry. Don't know the others listed. My take on 2 strokers is that chain saw oil and outboard oil are designed for two different...

Starting point for correct prop for cabin cruiser

Got a speedometer? Need these parameters to find out how you are doing: Max engine rated RPMs....from the engine mfgr. data Outdrive gear ratio Current prop pitch Actual engine operating RPMs when running at normal load, full throttle trim set to "sweet spot"....max velocity. Boat actual...

    1992 Bayliner Cuddy 3.0 Mercruiser

I had a 3.0 on an 18' Starcraft Holiday...a light aluminum, open station (no cabin) boat, both of which I restored....so I didn't have water intrusion hull problems, aluminum lighter than FG, or engine mechanical problems and prop was properly pitched. Without even attempting water sports, if 2...

    Is trigger supposed to wiggle?

I'd say that it's loose. As racer implied, if the engine works to suit you, don't worry about it. However, depending on the degree of wear, it could allow parts to contact parts not normally contacted and cause an engine shutdown and additional damaged components.

    Mercury 2004 90hp 2 stroke compression

The service manual covering '94 thru '05, 3 and 4 cylinder 2 strokers in the Jet 60 thru 125 HP specifies: "Expect problems when compression drops below 120 PSIG. Variance between cylinders, 10-15% max.". Continuing on they said that cylinder to cylinder uniformity is more important than...

    XR4 Blackmax 150 - can't find a prop to fit

4 ¼ belongs to the 3-4 cylinder 2 strokers in the 75-125 HP range normally to name one area of useage. Merc. came out with this smaller gearcase in the higher HP applications for specific boats and usage. Props that fit that GC are 13 to 14.0" max...with some removal of the front of the trim...

Considering upgrading this season - prop exchange programs

My 2c, following your and Jim's dialogue is that Jim's research told him that the Enertia was a more agressive prop and as such would load the engine more dropping the RPMs....question would be how much. Then the efficiency factor plays into the equation in that with the prop grabbing water...

Considering upgrading this season - prop exchange programs

Yeah it was an excuse but like fishing lures in my tackle boxes I can tell the difference in the plugs for salt water in that box and the ones for freshwater in that box. I may have been talking to an iboats prop guy as I buy some on here.

    Prop shaft seals?

Checking the shaft isn't hard to do. A quick check is to remove the prop and using a ruler, at the tip of the prop shaft is a dimple where it was milled on a lathe during mfgr. Using your tongue jack on your trailer adjust the lower unit off the floor a comfortable distance. from the rear...

    Does a Mercury model 200 (1978) 20hp have a kill circuit

The comments about not running without a battery hooked up to the alternator is that the alternator "could" over voltage and damage a voltage sensitive component internally. Easy solution to that problem is just disconnect the rect-regul. module from the Stator.....2 yellow wires on my current...

    Mercury 2+2 introduced?

Interesting point. In 1989 I bought a new, registered as 1989 Ranger bass boat and I6 115 Mercury engine. Years later, on here I talk about my 1989 "Tower" and get boo bood that production stopped in 1988. Well folks, ever hear of building something before you market it....apparently my 1989...
