Yup the DAM thing needs to come apart. Unless your REALLLLL lucky and the bearing slips off(not likely). Most cases you'll need a bearing separator.

The way it's set up: you'll have to hold it in place . Does it pop out of gear when the linkage is shifted up?

Electronic distributor made a buzzing sound

Honestly I know very little about the older ignitions. When I started working on outboards all I did was the newer stuff starting at 1984. Here's a link to Mastertech Marine, Guy named Bill Kelly answers the tough stuff, Good luck!!! https://maxrules.com/ChryslerModels/chrysmodelindex.html

    Force 40 issues

Like Nordin said: unhook the cables and shift by hand, do it in the water and have someone helping to turn it off if needed. IF???? it pops out of gear when the cable is unhooked??? The dog and maybe the gear is bad. Both can be machined to square off themating surfaces.

    Ugly Impeller

I had about 8/9 Forces with the groove in the shaft. It never bothered anything. Now a Mercruiser sterndrive?? It was so deep I had to seal it with JB or Marine Tex, Goop it up and put in a lathe and sand it down smooth. Lasted for ever.

    Reeds?

Nordin gave you most of the directions for the test. Go for a ride, run the motor get it good and hot, then run at wide open for a few minutes, then at wide open, just turn the key off. Don't throttle back or shift to N. Kill the engine then pull the plugs and check the burn. Throttling back...

Force 85 hp control cable questions

Make sure the shifter is in Neutral and the gear box is too. Then install the shift cable. The throttle cable: Shifter in Neutral. Towershaft: depending on the connector used? there's 2 available. One has a spring inside the other no. No spring: hook up everything and as you put the connector...

    Ugly Impeller

That's nothing to worry about. Some Mercury WP kits come with a rubber seal/boot that fits right at that spot.

    1986 85hp force 856X6L no spark

I have never split one. My luck, if one went bad I could just swap them around and the spark would be back :) They're set up so you can use the first side and then the second side. But the second side won't work unless the first side is being used( hope you understood that) The following link is...

    1986 85hp force 856X6L---Oil Plug retap

Over the years of owning lots of Forces, this spot caused the most aggravation. It would weep oil no matter what I did to seal it. I tried paste sealers(plumbers goo) thread tape and a few others. Never really did fid a way. My thoughts on Anti-seize, Yes use it. In salt water it doesn't work as...

    1986 85hp force 856X6L no spark

What I posted was the values for a CDI stator. The OEM are much higher than the CDI. I believe(not positive) the OEM is around 800. I'd have to get my service manual out to double check.
