    Stripped threads on carburetor

This is a challenge and while I have never tried to do this, it occurs to me that anything less than 1000% positive of no leaks is not worth it. Leaking fuel on a boat that could result in a fire is not like having a fire at home where you can simply walk outside. I have read in other threads...

Upgrading Merc A1-G1 Oil Pressure Light with an actual oil pressure gauge.

This is doable but will require a new sending unit (sensor). Here is one I found on Amazon for a great price link. And yes, three wires: +12V and Ground to the display and then another single wire from the new sensor to the display. For that wire you could use the existing wire run that the...

My 1998 Seaswirl boat wiring harness has a lot of corrosion in the 12+ pin connector

Changing out a multipin connector is doable but also may not be necessary. Let me explain. They make ‘connector cleaners’ that are like a little mini file or brush to clean both the male and female sides of a connector. They come in all different sizes so need to determine what would work best...

    Serpentine Belt

I carry a spare belt as well along with the needed tools to replace in the water. One of those tools are bung plugs to fit into the raw water pump hoses that need to come off to put on a new belt. The intake hose is below the water line and thus will flood the boat if not plugged up. I have...

    2011 bayliner flight series

Is this a new to you boat that you are trying to get going? If yes, there are a ton of other items to address as well. Post if that is the case and are interested. For the starter. Given you are hearing the starter motor spin, it’s likely the Bendix has failed. For the starter to get power the...

    Starter issue

Have you found any bits and pieces of the valve head? I still cannot wrap my head around how this happened…..

    Starter issue

I shoud haev been more clear > I was adding to my Ouch! and your Wow! as to how this condition could be.... a sort of half rhetorical, half serious question.... Any insight on how this condition could be?

Part name for the fuse and assembly next to ignition. 1985 Mercruiser A1G1

K, I got mislead by the “it cuts out" comment. Just match the hole diameter and the fuse size (larger is ok) Here is an example fm AZ link

    Starter issue

Useless the OP found the head of the valve (or pieces thereof) inside that chamber, it got chewed up and spit out. This is a real mystery: was running fine and then on the next try cannot start, in fact did not even turn over, only a ‘click’. So, no time for that valve disc to be chewed up and...

Part name for the fuse and assembly next to ignition. 1985 Mercruiser A1G1

If you mean the glass fuse inside the holder keeps blowing, then there is an issue with either the size of the fuse being installed or the current draw on the circuit. Or do you mean that the fuse holder itself needs to be replaced?

    Starter issue

Well, its decision time. If I may, please consider the following: Rebuilding an engine can be very satisfying and provide lots of bragging rights. If you have kids of the proper age, what fun to get them involved Unless you have a hull integrity issue, fiberglass boats last practically forever...

    Testing plug condition

Looks sweet, congrats on the build. Pulling plug wires one at a time is a time-honored way of initial troubleshooting. One concern to be aware of with this high voltage system is causing an arc inside the distributor cap that can be an issue (that spark is going somewhere!). Once you are done...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Good on ya for not wanting to pass along hidden issues. So, I would do this: Dye Pen the block > this way is stays in the boat (less cost) and provides a reasonable check for cracks. If found, post pics as It may be too detrimental to put on remain heads, ie now selling the boat with a busted...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Goose, Once you decide on the level of cash you are willing to spend it will dictate what you do. Back in post #14 your concern was not dumping lots of $ into this boat. No issue with that whatsoever. This is why I was suggesting look for any obvious issues (like that crack) and if none go for...
