Mercruiser 470 timing - service manual?

Nice timing light. I had my kids get me one a couple of years ago, since it was their money, I convinced them the 5568 unit was the way to go. And it does make it easier. Yes, timing is set at idle. And if the dist is tightened down some but not too tight (so it can still be moved by hand but...

    Starter issue

Another thought: try turning the engine backwards. This assumes there is a physical block (like a dropped valve) that precludes the engine from turning over further in its normal rotation (i.e. that cylinder’s piston is on the upstroke but cannot go up because of a dropped valve is preventing...

    Starter issue

Based on your symptoms – frozen engine and smashed up plug – it sure sounds like you dropped a valve or had some other internal catastrophe. Pull the valve cover off the side with the smashed plug and look at the tops of the valve stems for that cylinder. Are they still there?

Mercruiser 470 timing - service manual?

Just checking to see if your question was answered as it seems you are also asking about the procedure to reinstall the dist. in addition to what the timing should be. :)

    new engine overheats

I am almost afraid to ask, but how is this helpful to the OP’s issue?

    outdrive stuck

Using the grinder cut off the outer race and strip the bearing of its balls and cage so the only thing left on the shaft is the inner race. Clean off all the grease. Set the shaft splines in a vise protecting the splines. Have the bottom of the shaft sitting on top of the vise’s slide. Get...

    new engine overheats

I am not familiar with your set up so a couple of questions and a suggestion When gets to 200, are you on muffs or in the water putting around? Does just breaking it in mean that since 2016 this engine has not been run? Was the engine ever run and the temps stayed where they should have...

    Mercruiser exhaust manifold bolts

One thing to consider is to run a thread chaser (not tap) down each hole. Use WD40 when using it followed by a cleaner like Brake Clean (or compressed air) to clean out any debris. This is the best way to ensure you are getting the proper torque on the bolts especially if the new ones are longer...

Engine hour meter clicks with ignition on, but engine not running

Let’s make sure we are taking about the same thing. Like cars there are generally 4 positions of the key switch: 1. Off 2. Run 3 Start and 4. Acc (for accessories). As Cyclops points out if in the Run position the hour meter is running due to an assumed engine running. If your concern is that...

93 mercruiser 4.3 alpha one gen 2 fuel problem (I think)

Lou, this is a good way to check but how do you address if the floats are too heavy due to leaking or absorption? Thanks.

93 mercruiser 4.3 alpha one gen 2 fuel problem (I think)

Here are a couple of methods to check to see if engine is flooding possibly due to float compromised (too heavy) or other issue with the needle / seat / float adjustment. Take off the spark arrestor and be prepared to pull a couple of spark plugs. Start it up and once is stalls out, smell at...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

In that case hopefully no visible issues with the block and can get back on water with minimal investment and keep fingers crossed that the block / bottom end is ok / holds up. Given the situation I (and I assume others) would be interested in both your findings and pictures if you do not mind...

Volvo Penta 5.0 GL PWTR - severe overheat - thought I was on fire - troubleshooting Questions

Its good you found the root cause of the overheat. And while I get the idea of trying to do more in situ tests to see how extensive the rebuild will be, IMO not worth the time. Let me explain: this engine was severely overheated and may have multiple issues, some which may not be evident except...

    New to Volvo family

I do not recall if you are also having an issue running on the muffs (ie they do not seal up or some such) and would prefer to run on the flush connection but cannot due to the well. If so, here is an idea > experiment with pinching off the intake hose. They make pliers specifically for this...

    New to Volvo family

Interesting. I am not on a well, so have not paid attention before. However, when the hose is first turned on (prior to engine start) it flows heavily out the intakes. But once running, I do not recall a lot of water (if any) coming out the intakes. I’ll have to look next time I am running it...
