Piston Rings don´t fit, too little clearance, sits too tight

Bollerwagon, I am now both curious and confused and need your help. So, the issue of fitting the rings is now all set and your shop got them installed by griding the wiper groove on all 4 pistons? I have never heard of that before so highly curious about it. Any info you can share is...

Mercruiser 5.0L MPI Not Starting, I was driving the boat at a slow pace and it slowly stalled/stopped

I am a little perplexed. Here is why > a motor needs 3 basic things to run: fuel, spark and compression. You have two of the three. And short of doing a rebuild of the heads or, more likely, the entire engine anything else is fruitless. That is No. 1 priority IMO and that you continued to run...

    Cross country trailering advice/tips

Short answer is yes, longer answer is it depends. First off, I would look to see if there is grease flung all around (rear seal so look behind) and in front. Then I would grab the top of the tire and with a good shove and pull at the top, see it is it ‘rocks’ aka has excessive play. If any of...

    Cross country trailering advice/tips

Here is how i do it > when towing my boat: at every stop for gas or whatever, before I do anything else I walk completely around both the truck and trailer and feel the temperature of every tire and wheel hub along with checking the straps, hitch, etc. If a particular trailer tire (or hub) temp...

    4.3 efi tbi throttle question

Kallen, Boy this is a headscratcher. Here is a recap to help me understand what I think is your situation followed by a recommendation. Issue: performance of the boat from last season to this is horrible, hole shot is sluggish and top end not what it used to be. Never mind what the gauges are...

no oil after cylinder head recondition

Not trying to get off topic but rather to learn: do most (all?) marinized GM motors use roller lifters? Perhaps that there was a cutover time frame or ? Thanks....

no oil after cylinder head recondition

Just a word of caution and perhaps this is old school thinking and not relevant but when replacing only lifters and not the cam, need to be cognizant of cam wear > a new lifter can tear up a worn cam lobe. Also break in oils and process come into play.

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

The thermostat does not need to come open or be bypassed for water to enter into the Exh Manifolds and out the exhaust. See this post (link) that has a water flow diagram. The t-stat controls the circulation of the water in the block > closed to allow it to warm up and cycles open / shut to...

    4.3 efi tbi throttle question

Does this prop have a center hub that can ‘let go’? (Shaft spins but prop less so). While I would expect to rapidly deteriorate, check to see if you have a spun hub. If not and given the motor is still stong, only other factors that come to mind are weight or drag. Weight due to water intrusion...

    Mercruiser 120 poor starting

You’re welcome and before we get going, I am glad you are taking advantage of this forum. There are a lot of great contributors here that are willing to help. The key is your feedback and not giving up :) Frankly your issue is, IMO, a simple one > a lack of fuel delivery. More: there are...

    Mercruiser 120 poor starting

Guffer, if I may, I am going to suggest a different approach but will address a possible ‘cleaning’ method at the end for your pickup tube. As you are aware, troubleshooting is a process of elimination. If not this, then go after that based on a logical sequence and tests along the way. While I...

    Carb rebuild question

Scott, Nice listing :) However, I could not find the OPs in the listing nor on the Holley website which is also full of great info! @nitrosteve: The first PN 3885133 is the OEM’s part no. and not referenced in the Holley data. The 2nd number should be the Holley list no. but I cannot find it...

    Prop Question... Bayliner BR185

Concur with Scott > go to a 4 bladed. I had a similar use / profile as you when bought the new to me boat (Larson 228 LXi) some years ago. Came with a 3 bladed but no hole shot & sluggish to plane out and WOT was shy of spec at abt 4800 vs 5000 (two people). Talked to the local marina and they...

Piston Rings don´t fit, too little clearance, sits too tight

For my benefit here is a recap of your situation > it helps me think thru things :) Doing a rebuild on engine > only honing cylinders, not bored Intending to reuse ‘old’ pistons but with all new rings had back-clearance issue on Oil scrapper Thus, decided to go with New Pistons that the shop...

    Mercruiser 120 poor starting

Post checking if good compression and spark etc. from above, and still have the 30 sec. run then stall, check this: post stalling, take spark arrester off so can see down the carb throat. Then pump open the throttle fully in a rapid motion while looking down the throat. Should see a stream of...

    2015 Mercruiser 4.3 EFI issues.

Cracked heads / block / blown head gasket can also come from overheating. In addition to the above, also suggest to run a basic mechanical evaluation on the motor prior to trying to restart > a compression test. And even prior to that, suggest pulling off the valve covers looking to see if that...
