    VP SX oil leak?

While there are procedures for pressure testing its involved with needed fitting and gauges. Instead pull the boat and once all dry wipe down all the fitting into the cylinders as well as making sure there is no oil residue on the cylinder rods. A difficult place to get to is where the cylinder...

Time for Riser & Manifold > VP or Barr?

For the Riser, I was planning on using the Permatex Aviation (80019) material recommended by others, but the dynamic of putting on the risers mentioned above precluded that. For the Manifold, back in the 70s, when I was first learning to rebuild engines, I understood that putting gasket sealer...

Distributor installation – is this right?!

Well, this is one of those cases where I must have been seeing things. I got back to this ‘issue’ and pulled the dist. and did a through inspection. No shinny areas where there should not be indicating something rubbing that should not be. A scope inspection of the hole showed all is as it...

Volvo Penta Drive Belt - Lots of dust and quickly wearing??

Just thought of this: also post pictures of old worn belts focusing on the area of the wear: the edge, the ribs, etc. And in the engine compartment where is the largest collection of belt dust. This should help narrow down what the issue may be.

Volvo Penta Drive Belt - Lots of dust and quickly wearing??

CaptnO, Assuming pulley is not loose on the shaft, runout is caused by either a bent pulley or a bent shaft or both. Thus, fixing can be replacing the pulley only or the entire pump assembly. However, I re-read the entire post and three things stood out to me. In post 8 Lou commented that in...

Time for Riser & Manifold > VP or Barr?

Finally! I was able to get back to the boat toady to finish off the Manifold and Riser job. While all ended up well, great in fact, there were a few lessons learned. So, posting here for others if they undertake this job. Overall, it’s a straightforward job with no special tools needed but they...

Volvo Penta Drive Belt - Lots of dust and quickly wearing??

If the pully can wobble on its shaft, like it’s a loose fit on the shaft > that is an issue! If the pulley is tight on the shaft but wobbles when you turn it (called runout > i.e. as the pulley is rotated it traces a back and forth profile (without the belt on, and you can turn the PS Pump...

    Fuel return

I was able to get back to another job on my boat today so took off the access cover for the fuel tank and took pictures. Hope this helps.

    Fuel return

Dubs, good point I was focused on the engine side. Jrato: The full fill ‘cap’ typically also has a vent line and the two hoses (a large fill and smaller vent) are routed to the cap. See this link for some pics and how they work.

    Fuel return

I have this same motor in a 2005. There is no ‘return to the fuel tank’ line on mine. There is a high-pressure line from the pump to the fuel rail and a low-pressure return line to the pump. These lines require a special tool to remove, there are no hose clamps and one is larger than the other...

    Bogging in relation to distributor

@Malibu, if your current manifold is that rusty, I would suspect the injector bores are also fairly rusted up and will cause a problem not just pulling injectors for maintenance but also being able to properly seal back up again without a lot of effort in the injector bore. The new one was a...

    Bogging in relation to distributor

Malibu Please provide your engine model and other pertinent boat info. The picture looks like ‘crab cap’ type of distributor and they do not have a gasket to seal the cap. In fact, these dist. are purposely vented and compliant with the J1171 standard. See this post (link) for some info on that...

Time for Riser & Manifold > VP or Barr?

Due to a knee injury that has kept me grounded, I have been delayed in getting back to this until today. Normally we would be putting the boat in the water tomorrow, but that is not happening. Perhaps next weekend if all goes well. And so far, it has > I was able to pressure test the Barr...

    High idle

Jrato To help provide some background, with these 'modern' engines with fuel injection they use a verity of sensors (like the TPS you mentioned) and, to control the air flow for a proper idle, an IAC. Its sits on the side of the throttle body and is easy to replace. An VP branded one will cost...

    Volvo Penta Kad32 Belt Failure

While you probably already checked, make sure all the pulleys are free to rotate and not biding or wobbly.

Distributor installation – is this right?!

Unfortunately, not yet. While the weather has cooperated during the weekends, my body has not. I have had some issues with my knee the last few weeks and a recent MRI has revealed I have a crack in a critical weight bearing area – very painful! So now I have a boat with a suspect distributor...

Time for Riser & Manifold > VP or Barr?

Thanks all. Any thoughts on using some sort of gasket sealer between the riser and manifold? I have seen that some use Permatex 80019 Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant. Thanks again.
