    100hp falters

This will take some explaining. '88, Mercury 100hp, 4 cyl, oil injection. Motor starts, warms up in the hoist at 1000rpm, move out to big water through the channel (4 minutes) at 1200rpm, open to 3000rpm in open water. Within 30-40 seconds rpms drop, motor falters, acts like it's running on...

    Fuel Pump check valve

I rebuilt the fuel pump on my 1988 100hp 4cyl, oil injection. When I tried to blow through the small tube marked "in", it would click every time I blew into it. I probed into the opening and the probe stopped halfway to the inlet into the pump mechanism. Is there a check valve on the "in"...

    9.9hp water in crankcase oil

Besides a leaking head gasket, what could be the source of water getting into the crankcase oil? Drained the crankcase this fall, and milky oil came out. 😵‍💫 Besides a bad head gasket, what else could be the cause?

    '89 100hp Merc 4cyl oil injection-runs on 2 cylinders

This motor is a wonderful, wonderful motor that has given me years and years of superb service. Now, she sputters and refuses to run on 4 cylinders. She starts and will keep running but at 2000rpm, but at 2000rpm+, cylinders #3 and #4 don't kick in as they should. She runs very rough. She...

Thanks to you both. Topped it off with ARF-F. Works like a charm. I'm READY to hit Lake Michigan for early season salmon and lakers.

Below 2000rpm, the motor runs on WHICH TWO cylinders? Can someone confirm that?

    '89 100hp Merc quits

1989 100hp Merc 4cyl. Wonderful motor, historically trouble free. Now, it falters and frequently stalls when moving throttle from idle to forward or reverse, or creeping forward at idle speed. It starts fine, runs at 2000rpm and above very well. Below 2000rpm, 2 cylinders stop as is normal, so...

    Automatic bilge pump

Alumarine, Thank you for getting me to start thinking about the exit angle from the bilge pump. I think I fixed it. Since the pump exits sideways, I needed to find space for the hose to slowly curve upwards to the open transom. I re-rerouted the exhauust tube to the pump now sits flat on the...

    Automatic bilge pump

Hose is clear. It pumps when I turn it on manually. If I could fit a PVC elbow to the pump so instead of exiting sideways, it exited up, then the pump would sit upright, and when jostled and bounced, it would tend to land upright. Plastic tray also sounds like a good idea.

    Automatic bilge pump

Hose is clear. When I hole the on-auto-off lever to "on", it pumps like a champ. I'll try the plastic tray, but vibration and bouncing would seem to bounce the plastic plate enough to tip over the pump. Epoxy is too demanding of the surface it adheres to. Is there another glue that will...

    Automatic bilge pump

I have 2 bilge pumps: one manual and one automatic for which I no longer have the directions or even know the brand (probably a Rule). The automatic bilge pump cycles every 3 minutes to check for water. I have very limited space in the bilge, and cannot screw the automatic pump to the hull...

    9.9 Merc 4-stroke won't start

For many years, I've use my trusty 9.9 (2009) Mercury on Lake Michigan for a trolling motor. I only use non-ethanol gas. The 9.9 used to always start on the 2nd or 3rd pull, and runs well most of the time. I ran it out of gas in November to put away at storage. When preparing the boat the...

    riveted aluminum boat leaks

I'm hoping to get good advice. For 10 years, I’ve had a 19', 1989 SeaNymph Great Lakes Special, riveted heavy gauge aluminum hull, and plywood floors I replaced in 2015. The boat is an extremely durable, and excellent for big lake fishing: high gunwales, very deep V, heavy gauge aluminum. This...

    Spark plug quiz

OK, here's the quiz, and I don't know the answer. My 2009 Mercury 9.9, 2 cylinder, 4-stroke, single carb engine is used exclusively for trolling at 900-1,200 rpm. Before I had the prop pitch changed to allow the engine to run faster for 1.8-2.5mph, it would foul plugs. Now, it does not foul...

    Hotter spark plug?

My 2009 Merc 9.9 4-stroke is used only as a trolling motor, mostly at very low rpm, 800-1100 rpm. I motor out onto Lake Michigan using the 100hp, turn off the 100hp, then fire up the 9.9 to troll at 800-1100 rpm for 2-3 hours. Fouling spark plugs is a common occurrence. Would a hotter spark plug...

9.9 4-stroke falters after an hour

Someone out there must know how to solve this problem. My 9.9 (presumably 2009) Mercury 4-stroke kicker motor runs good for an hour at 1200-1400rpm, then it begins to cough and sputter and run on one cylinder. I put it in neutral, rev up the engine (3000rpm) to clear it out, put it back in...
