Mercury BlackMax 175Hp, difficult staring, and then bogging down.

Merc got the Extra Displacement by removing the Iron Sleeves from the 2 liter Block, and chroming the Bores. Pre 82, that displacement was for the 200 and 225, then in 82 when Merc started Prop Rating their bigger Outboards, the 2.4 black was used for the 175 and 200. Removal of the Iron...

Mercury BlackMax 175Hp, difficult staring, and then bogging down.

On the 3rd you reported "I did a compression test and got readings 110, 125, 120, 115, 120, 125 which is average for a 2 stroke" 5 days later... " Recently it overheated again and this time scored one of the bores, see the attached image. I yet to do another compression test after this happen."...

    I've got a 1971 Mercury 110 9.8hp outboard with a stuck tiller handle

So you removed the Tiller Handle, and it is Frozen, or is the Part still part of the Engine still Frozen? As for the "other one on..." Is that a Complete Motor, or just the Tiller Handle?

    Timing is retarded ;-)

You would have to speak to the Manufacturer/Engineers, as they are the Ones who had their Reason(s) to change the Number.

I have no Problem using a GM labeled part, provided it is the Correct Part. I have seen many 3rd Party Parts that while the part was a GM Part, and it looked Identical, it wasn't the Correct Part. Years ago it was the same when it came to Carbs and Distributors, some people's Attitude, "it looks...

Was it a Genuine Mercury Part, or a 3rd Party(including GM) Part?

    1989 Mercury 200 Black Max

Have you checked the wiring for shorts to Ground? Have you unhooked the Sensors/Sending units to see of it quits?

Early 80 Saws, to me are practically Brand New. When you said Old, I figured you meant something pre 1950

Felt Air Cleaner? For the past 50 years I have seen nothing but Foam Filters on Chain Saws, so that one you are referring to, must be really old

Maybe you need to get a Prop with Vent Holes to improve the Hole Shot

A 2 Stroke Engine would not last very long if it were inhaling Wood Dust, and it wouldn't be Build Up in the Combustion Chamber that kills it

    I think the only engines that had the Decompression Feature were the 57 - 59 35hp, and the 60 - 61 40hp

The 25s, have a different Cylinder Head from 18/20s, to make up for the Lower Piston Height in the 25. If someone stuck a 25hp head on an 18/20, then the Compression would be high enough to cause Detonation. But I doubt even that mismatch would have 200psi. Maybe with a very large Carbon Buildup...
