    Question about battery post connections

Not sure why wing nuts are not recomended, I always add a simple lock washer under the wing nut and never had one come loose. Without a lock washer they are useless, but with a simple lock washer, they are much easier to loosen andvtighten without looking for wrenches. Been using them on my boat...

    Distorted Fish Shape On Fishfinder?

I am also a Maumee Bay fisherman, nice to see someone from this area. Well aware of the abundance of sheepshead, so many just throw them back in not realizing they eat the same food our prized perch and walleye eat.....I usually keep them for fertilizer or make sure they cant reproduce if I put...

Disconnecting the fuel line, let engine burn gas ?

Keep in mind we use far less oil in the gas today than in 1955 !! Also different types of bearings and materials. The aluminum we use today was not heard of in the 50's. Today's closer tolerances can be damaged more quickly and .....hopefully we have learned something over the years that can...

    Erratic Tachometer

Had my new to me boat out today for another short shake down cruise. Once underway I noticed the tach reading erratically. At half throttle it was showing 6000 rpm and went as high as 7500 rpm but the Merc 40 was not screaming like it should have been, so I know it is the tach not the actual...

Fuel running out of carb when primer bulb is squeezed. Cleaned my carbs and the issue persists.

Just cleaning a carb rarely works well, if your gonna take them apart, get a complete rebuild kit with new gaskets, needle and seat. Also they have instructions for properly setting up and adjusting your carb.

    Modern Engine Thoughts

In order to pass EPA regs todays modern 2 strokes have lots of expensive electronics to meet air quality standards. Compare the price of a modern 2 stroke and you will see they are more expensive than a 4 stroke due to all those fancy electronics. Yep 4 stroke is heavier, slower in the power...

Disconnecting the fuel line, let engine burn gas ?

That was how I was taught years back, many years back actually !! Single carb motors was ok to run out the fuel but never on multicarb engines. Back then we didnt have all these products to keep the fuel from going bad, so why not take advantage of science and use the products designed to help us.

Using Aluminum plate for a transom instead of wood

I would think a 1/2" piece of aluminum then add a one inch piece of plywood that could easily be replaced would work well. The alum would give strength and the wood for vibration and lateral strength. Just design it so the wood could be replaced easily, unlike the factory designers do.

    Boat tool box

Very few for an outboard, when I had my I/O the engine was easier to service on the water if necessary. Hanging over trying to service an outboard is not very likely. I do carry an extra set of spark plugs, and a socket to change them. A wrench to fit the prop nut and a spare prop, spare prop...

    boat seats

Me either but the previous owner put that thought into my head....really hate to have to replace a seat or seats if they would come out. If no one has ever had one fly out, then I might be over thinking this. Mine is a side console so only one side has wind protection with a windshield

    boat seats

The pedestal does lock into the base, then there is a shaft attached to the seat bottom that slips into the pedestal but there is no lock at this point. Makes it easy to move seats from one position to another. The pedestal can be unlocked and moved to other bases. The shaft under the seat is...

Anyone know where to find this piece?

If that is cast aluminum like it appears in your pic, wouldnt be that hard to make. Get some putty and reshape that one back to original condition. Find a casting shop, take it to them or send to them to cast you a new one. They just need your repaired part to push into clay or sand to make a...

What is this leaking from my lower unit?

Oil in the fuel causes the exhaust to contain a black residue, anything that is part of or connected to the exhaust will have that black residue. That hole may be a drain opening for the leg exhaust, thus the black crud
