    Transom Glassing Opinions??

For the gelcoat process, you are spot on. I'm not familiar with 'finishing resin' - I use US Composites laminating resin for my entire project. What exactly is finishing resin?

Should I buy a boat that has been sitting in storage for 15 years?

I don't understand why some people are assuming the boat is a wreck, a disaster, broken, in pieces, etc. The boat is reportedly in very clean condition, with only 18 hours on the engine. Why would you run from this? I'd just want to make sure the condition really is as advertised, then have the...

    Best manual for boats

I'm not familiar with the newer book; Manual #14 is what I use, but I'd be interested in seeing a copy of the newer book. With any luck, someone who has seen it will jump on and tell us about it.

    Best manual for boats

The Boatinfo (http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html) site has manuals for that engine and outdrive, but that site relies on Adobe's Flash, which has reached End of Life and is no longer supported. (I just tried it and it worked, but I suspect that won't last for long...) There is no word as to...

Should I buy a boat that has been sitting in storage for 15 years?

Will you be a first time boat owner? If yes, do you have a buddy who is knowledgeable about boats and could look it over with you? If you both thought it looked OK, having a marine mechanic look it over with regards to the engine and outdrive might be good enough. I suggest that only because...

Should I buy a boat that has been sitting in storage for 15 years?

The story is that it's being sold by a Florida dealer but it was stored in New Jersey... which raises the question why a Florida dealer is selling it.

Question with heaters for fiberglasss work

    Don't conflate volatility/smelliness and flammability.

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

Have you read the thread on the rebuild of an '87 Larson DC-215 by @sms986 ? His boat and yours have somewhat different construction at the stern, but you might find some useful stuff in his highly detailed account. Nothing wrong with using two sheets of 3/4" plywood at the transom, so long as...

Should I buy a boat that has been sitting in storage for 15 years?

So, not an obsolete engine, which is good news, and depending on which model of Volvo outdrive, maybe no problem there, too. I'm not a Volvo expert, but I recall that one of the Volvo models from that era was a clunker. Hopefully, someone who knows Volvo will come along and chime in. Besides...

Question with heaters for fiberglasss work

From all that I read, it was only when poly is used in really, really large volume that there is a problem. I was concerned about it, because I had planned to restore my boat in a garage with open flame propane heaters. I researched it quite a bit, and pretty consistently found that it is mostly...

    Is this legit?

The windshield was probably the most valuable part of that boat, eh?

    Is this legit?

Bayliners of that era are not known to be very well made and that one does not look like it was particularly well cared for. Unless you're looking for a boat to part out (or a trailer to sell), it's probably not worth anything.

Anyone here interested in Japanese kitchen knives?

I love to cook, and I cook a great deal, and lately I've been very much into nice kitchen knives. For years, I've used decent stainless steel knives, like Henckels and Wustofs (and earlier, even some Chicago Cutlery), but in the last several years, I've discovered hand made Japanese knives. In...

    Transom Glassing Opinions??

If you wanted to get really picky, you could rough up the existing fiberglass with some sandpaper, but a good washdown with acetone would be sufficient.

    Smarttabs

My boat, a 19' bowrider, was repowered from a 4.3 Volvo Penta to a 350 Mag and when I hit about 50 mph, the boat would start chine walking. Pretty unnerving. I also had pretty substantial bow lift. I did some reading here and other places and SmartTabs were mentioned as an option. Initially...

Question with heaters for fiberglasss work

I heated my garage with standard propane heaters while fiberglassing my boat over the winter. I was using polyester resin, and the propane heat posed no problems. MEKP, the catalyst, is very flammable, but once it's mixed in the resin, there is no problem*. You just have to be careful when...

    Smarttabs

Are you hoping to solve some problem with the SmartTabs (e.g., porpoising, chine walking, trouble getting out of the hole)? As much as I like mine (for resolving chine walking), I would not add them without a reason.

I have them and I really like ‘em. A great addition to your boat.
