    De-winterize VP 8.1 Gi-J help please

This week I plan to de-winterize my new to me 8.1 Gi-J. I had a shop winterize it right after I purchased it last fall and do all the fluid and filter changes. As far as I can tell I have two plastic drain plugs on each side of the engine. I think the top plug on each side is for the riser...

Maybe my turn for new boat time

I was looking for a large family type bowrider with a head area and really wanted an OB but just couldn't find anything in my price range and settled for an Ebbtide 2660 Ztrak 8.1 VP dual prop. A boat I tried hard to find and might be a good choice for you if you can settle for 25' is the...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

My thoughts are you may be leaking from a drain plug that maybe didn't get tight from being loosened for winterizing or the other thought which is very bad is that it wasn't winterized or not winterized correctly and you have a cracked engine:-( I hope not but getting into the teens will do it.

Towing Boston Whaler 130 with Honda CRV

This may not be necessary and I'm not being a "smart you know what" with this comment. I sincerely want to help. We all are at different experience levels with all things in life. We all at the beginning don't know what we need to know. Your comment in the original first post of, "BW-130...

Engine shutdown procedure VP 8.1 Gi-J

Thanks everyone for your input. I feel much better about the situation. To be clear there are a lot of posts from early 2000 year engines that had issues. Water injestion was part of the problem but as mentioned I think that was either a poor designed exhaust system (risers not tall enough)...

    Bunk Boards or Guide Poles?

This is spot on. The guide poles are too "whimpy" to deal with much side force such as from high winds or current even for a 16' boat. I just purchased a 26 1/2' bowrider that sits very flat on the trailer bunks. If there is any current or wind it is very hard to load and get the hull lined...

Engine shutdown procedure VP 8.1 Gi-J

Thank you for your reply. So what you are saying makes sense to me, just before shutdown run the engine above idle speed for a short time to burn off any condensation but return to idle rpm before shutting the engine down. There were posts that were specific to run the engine at 1500 to 2000...

Engine shutdown procedure VP 8.1 Gi-J

Hi Everyone, I'm looking forward to getting boating season kicked off here soon and getting the Ebbtide 2660 Ztrak with an 8.1 Volvo Gi-J in the water for the first time. I've read a lot of posts in various places about water injestion for these engines. I see some statements that are...

This is important, at least what I've always been told and from guys that had experience.

VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

Thanks for your patience! I see now says the blind man:-) I now understand that I need to look up into the pump. I'll do that next time I'm at the boat. Hopefully it won't show any signs of the dreaded paint. I'm hoping someone will post the exact year that the paint stopped being a...

    Boat Trailer Bunk Carpet

I have put new carpet on the bunks of a trailer but the wood bunks were is good shape so I didn't have to replace them. What I was told to do and did was to use heavy outdoor carpet, preferably from one of the boat trailer manufacturers. I was told to wrap the bunk and fold the carpet under...

VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

Great information. Let's hope someone with verified information posts about the last year that paint was present. One question related to your last post. I agree now would be the best time to take care of any pump service but since I had the boat winterized and they put a new fuel filter on...

VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

ESGWheel, Thanks for the reply and the link. Very good video. I purchased the boat and had it serviced and winterized in early November so the fuel filter is new, therefore no use looking now. When I start using the boat in the spring after a couple of uses I'll unscrew the fuel filter and...

VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

Thanks, Very good information. I am a new Volvo Penta owner. My engine is a 2011 8.1 Gi-J. When you say "plaguing older MPI engines" can you list the year that it was not an issue? I think of my 2011 as "older" but maybe it isn't in this context. Thanks again!

    GPS / speed app

The Speedometer Free version is what I use for my Iphone as well and it serves my purpose very well. Of course you have to put up with being asked to upgrade to a paid premium version but the free version is plenty capable for my use.

What boat is this? Aluminium 5m cuddy cab

Interesting, with the Shimano badge on it reminds me of a river fishing jet boat. The bow looks like a good place with the support for bow fishing:-)

    Just curious

In my neck of the woods it all depends on which ramp you choose as far as the potential for your vehicle to be broken into or vandalized. Sadly the ramps that are in state parks or Gov't areas are the safest then means they get even more traffic so they become overcrowded and you have many...

    Help for prop replacement

What kind of hull is this, the hull design has a big impact on what type of prop works best. A high performance 24' hull that gets up on a pad would need a way different prop than a 24' pontoon boat for example. Let us know what boat this is and I'm sure you would get more help. As a general...

    1984 Bayliner Ski with 94 Merc Black Max 150HP 2.5 V6 Outboard

Both options are better than the Bayliner. However both are inboard - outboards. That carries it's own potential headaches. Of the two I like the Sea Ray unless the 4 Winns is a much later model. I didn't see the model year on the 4 Winns. Also the 4 Winns looks longer than 18' which is...

    1984 Bayliner Ski with 94 Merc Black Max 150HP 2.5 V6 Outboard

You're welcome and to clarify my last comment. Whatever you find get it checked out before you make any deal. The check out might not rule the boat - engine out but may give you some negotiating leverage. Good luck, hope you find that "treasure" that will be the perfect first boat for you:-)
