1st. we're talking Mercury not Johnson! 2nd. the late 70s 50 hp 4 cylinder or 65 hp 3 cylinder (I'm not sure) had small hoses running through the fuel-pump to pre-heat the fuel How would it be cooling the fuel if the hot water from the head would run through the fuel-pump?!? I guess that concept...

It would be nice to have the serial# of the outboard so we would know exactly what unit we're talking about (2) it has everything to do with in reverse because when the reverse-lock would not work the motor / LU will pop out of the water (3) and is routed through the fuel-heater/pump (4) Yes...

I had two of these, there were not bad little engines except the water-jackets tend to weep-/leak when cranking the engine in neutral it is normal for the prop to turn, due to oil in the gear-box (as long as the clutch is not engaged, easy to verify by holding the prop still while cranking)...

70s force 70... No reaction from key

As Nordin already mentioned; make sure your shifter is in neutral but also make sure the neutral-switch is pushed-in (located at the controls on engine side) IF pushed in...you could put a jumper across (to check if switch is good)

    1986 60hp Mercury Stator replacement

Again, I'm not sure anymore. Sometimes the Stator-wires are not grouped together and the charging-portion of the wires are positioned in a different location on the stator

    1986 60hp Mercury Stator replacement

IF...my memory service me correctly.....the wires need to be on the left-side(opposite side of the switch-box) otherwise it will rev. like crazy.

are the lower-units compatible? with each other?

    1978 Chrysler 85HP Powerhead Swap

Sure, but don't hook them up in series because then a faulty one will not close the circuit (ground path) You would have to split the wire & run one to each sensor

96 Mercury Force going backwards with the shift on forward

I was kind of curious to find out, but I guess his "mechanic" fix it??
