    Trouble shoot with a timing light.-----Hook it up to #1 and test run.-----Observe the flashing light when motor falters.-----Repeat with 2 , 3 , 4 as needed.-----Then again it could be a plug wire shorting to the cowling too.------I can not touch / hear your motor.----So the testing is up to you.

    These older motor can be an economical way to go boating.-----But they require that you learn / want to learn how to repair them.----Most shops do not work on them.------So these motors are worthless to most folks today.----And folks who know how to repair them often get them for free.

    Sounds like the shift shaft splines jammed due to rust forming in the coupling.----The splines normally slide out and there is NOTHING to disconnect.-----These 4 cylinder 650's are a nice runner.----The first thing I would do is a compression test.----Post the actual values.---Or remove bypass...

    Yes , that is an outboard with a special bracket.------There are 2 different blocks in V-4 models.----Need model #.

    Throttle plates should be CLOSED at idle.-----Correct that FIRST and test run.------Replace that damaged roller.

    Trim was an " expensive " option in those days.-----Today you rarely see a big motor without trim.-----And you see 9.9 HP models with trim / tilt options.

    Was given a 2004 Ya@%A 90 HP 4 stroke.----Not worth fixing.----Picked up a 150 HP Ya%$#@a 4 stroke for $1000 Ca funds.----Well to do folks said---" get us a new one " no need to waste a short season at the summer home.

    So many people are poorly informed.----Indeed a power trim / tilt 0172858 was an option for the 55 in 1979.----Post pictures of the ones found on E-bay.-----And they are easy to install.

    The 4 strokes really run so nice.----But that comes at a cost.-----I can't believe the number of used 4 strokes for sale these days.-----Perhaps the folks who can afford them buy a new one.----Repair / service work is big $$$$ on them.

    Razor blade type scraper.-----Exacto knife.----Carbide scraper.-----Homemade gasket scraper ( power hack saw blade ) is what I use.----Can't imagine it would take more than 10 minutes for me.
