    1989 xr4 150 that sat 3 years issues.

don't pay any attention to tha idle timin'/rpm on tha hose as long as it does ok.. put it in tha water, under a load (in gear) and set idle rpm/speed with TIMING ONLY to whatever makes you and tha motor happy.... numbers are irrelevant..

Mercury 150 xl 2 stroke, carbureted, head temperatures vary by 15 to 25 degrees

really.. gettin' an over temp warning buzzer?.. its an "open" coolin' system... are you takin' all these readings under a load at different rpms in tha lake or ona hose in tha driveway? been around a lotta V6 mercs ('76 ta '08, production and high perf.) and have never seen merc say tha 2 lbs...

Mercury black max overheats at higher rpms

5 ta 7 is good.. 20 ta 25 may be a little on tha higher side.. look for at least 14 ta 18 on big end.. those are tha "normal" pressures.. i'd go with a poppet kit first.... not to pricey and new can't hurt nothin'............. jmo. jan... be sure ta "stake" tha new grommet in tha block...

Mercury black max overheats at higher rpms

sounds like a poppet but you didn't say what tha water pressure (in tha lake under a load) was at idle and wfo or close to it?.... don't rely on tha gauge for an accurate temp reading........... number wise.

    1998 Mec 150 black max

tha pumps were added for tha roundy round racing boys.. acceleration off corners and choppy water.. they jus didn't work out as they were supposed to.. they have no effect on idle circuit up or down.. tha '95's didn't have pumpers unless they were some kinda "left over" item merc wanted ta use...

    1998 Mec 150 black max

pumper WMH carbs only lasted 2 years.. last of which was '92... they were a bust for regular boating use.. if your motor has these it is either not a '98 (should be WMV's) or they have been changed??? tha pumps can be eliminated without any repercussions to performance.. simply strip all tha...
