Looking at this Chieftain 21ft, what questions should I ask?

I get that, all the boats I've bought were pretty much a basket case so I knew what I was getting. They've done some serious work on their old Chief, any insight into why they want to sell? Chief looks great in the pics, only thing I can see that you may look at closer are the trailer bunks...

    1985 22' MR220V Mariner

Yeap that's what I've seen guys use and then use the split corrugated stuff once above deck.

Nice Mariner, what's the motor? Looks like a V6 Johnson.

Looking at this Chieftain 21ft, what questions should I ask?

Did you get the Chief? I'd like to see some pics if you did. :) A 115HP OB would be fine for that boat and get you around 35MPH but you would want a smaller kicker for trolling and another way to port if the main had an issue.

    1985 22' MR220V Mariner

That's a standard mess we see and yeah it needs rewired to avoid fire hazards, I see a bunch of sketchy connections. Most Mariner guys will run the wiring in conduit up to the center console. Us side console guys have all the mess inside the starboard gunnel hanging down in a rats nest.

    1972 Starcraft Nova

You 72 would have limber holes bent into the rib for water passage to the bilge but they get clogged up pretty easy. Some guys clean them out with a hacksaw blade. You can start by using a pressure washer or whatever you have and spray water at the rib end openings. The later 70's they quit even...

Model of early 80s IO StarCraft?

Yeap, exactly what mine looks like too, a 78 model year made in 77 according to the HIN.

    1968 StarCraft Holiday restoration

I was thinking you may have had an older dog eared prop that came on the 4cyl motors of the era but that one does have some cupping but the rake is pretty tame. The pic is of a Turning Point Hustler, a good priced AL prop that has all the SS features, substantial cupping, aggressive rake and...

    1968 StarCraft Holiday restoration

What is the prop make and model? Some have little to no cupping and more of a tame rake. The cupping gives the prop more bite and will lower RPMs a couple hundred just by that feature alone. Diameter won't help much as you're pretty close to the max there. You can always increase the pitch...

Model of early 80s IO StarCraft?

Guess I shouldn't have said identical hulls, while yours has the port side fuel filler that was later moved to on top the gunnel, it doesn't have the distinctive V5 bottom strake that ends at the bow. CR for cruiser, okay I guess that would make sense but they had enough room to spell it out...

Model of early 80s IO StarCraft?

For sure it's an Islander, mine is a few years older but has much more info on the data plate as far as model goes. Otherwise identical hulls but different motor / interior configuration. No idea why the data plate on yours says CR 221, can't even think of what CR would stand for?

That is one rare as hens teeth Starcraft, never have seen a V5 with the options yours has, welcome to the V5 club!

Welcome aboard, the main restoration section will have more input for you in the fiberglass area, we're just a bunch of tin heads here. To answer your question though, you have to remove the rub rail and any rivets that hold the cap on top of the hull. To get to the transom you have to remove...

    New (to me) boat owner

That bow cleat is super cool! Yeah loosing that much power can be a couple things, dropping a cylinder or fuel delivery. At least with these carb motors it can only be fuel or fire.

My best guess would be 850 lbs boat motor and persons.

    StarCraft Holiday

Welcome aboard, nice to see another old Holly up for some work to get her back on the waves. I'm curious about the bow, seems to be completely different than any I've ever seen.

    Delta Dawn- ‘72 Chieftain

Nice OB Chief! On the trailer personally I would start looking for a roached out glass boat of the same / similar length that has a good trailer, bonus if it's galvanized with no rust issues. Guys darn near give away their garbage glass boats to have someone else haul it off. Seeing that rust...
