Also: On the Gen + true Vortec keep in mind that the intake manifold bolts take much lower torque than the pre Vortec, IIRC pre Vortec is like 30-35 ft lbs whereas the Vortec is like 15 ft lbs. I think there was a mistake in the Mercruiser shop manual when the Gen + first came out that used the...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

On mine I get a slight squeal when coming to the stops but no grating sounds, and as old as it is, I never had problems with the drive drifting down after being trimmed up. So maybe you're on the right track. Why not look on the EU Volvo Penta parts site and see if they sell a rebuild kit for...

Even before you get to that point... get a thread chaser (not a tap) and clean out all the cyl head bolt threads in the block and make sure that the new bolts will fully thread all the way in. Your engine is closed cooled so they will probably be pretty clean but on a raw water cooled engine...

Ah yep thought it had the Merc Batwings based on the year range but someone already up dated it. Then you did say you had full closed cooling. Your heads & block look good but I guess the machine shop will tell the tale. The block deck you’ll be able to judge when you get all the gasket...

The pump I don’t know about, I’d search around here on the VP I/O forum, to see if people have had SX pumps apart & fixed them. I’m guessing the one you have is similar or the same as the one Volvo used on the SX series rather than the original OMC Cobra design. I have been able to get parts...

    Sea Ray 1977 200SR

Try looking on Barr Marines website to see if they make a version of that manifold. If you REALLY love that boat and want to keep it fix what’s needed to get it going but if it’s a constant headache think about doing a transom rebuild and swap in a modern (Mercruiser) drivetrain. Big job but...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

If you do it your self there’s 2 things to get past: 1) end caps, these can be tough to get off, I used heat time & patience 2) removing the eyelet end that’s on the piston rod, this has to be done to replace 2 of the seals in the cap. Micheal Romer covers both in his vid I advise leaving the...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Looked at it, might be the same thing with a different part #. There are basically 3 seals for the end cap and 1 oring and 2 split rings for the piston.

Did this engine have those one piece batwing manifolds on them? I know you said the passed the acetone test but I wonder if they leaked when they got hot? Those manifolds were known to be troublesome, I think they were used from 96-99. There is a Merc conversion kit to change it to the normal 2...

OMC original parts are readily availably here in the USA try marine engine.com, not sure if they ship to UK. A good hydraulic shop could do it but as long as you can get those end caps loose (pin wrench) & you have the right parts you can easily do it.

That looks like it You have to compare the seals you took off to what’s in the kit because they usually include ones you don’t need

Bombardier Recreational Products They are the company who bought OMC’s assets after the bankruptcy in 2000 and who still market OMC parts. Check Marineengine.com for parts…the kits have the orings needed for repair

Forgot to mention, what the pictograms on the drive are trying to communicate is do not remove the fill plug with the drive down or else you can get a shower in hydraulic fluid! tilt it up first. That's what I did after rebuilding my cyls and bleeding the system (5 up and 5 down cycles).

Yep I see the difference. You'll wind up with a much better built boat than you can buy!

very old pix from 2007 when we did this....not the greatest job but still solid... I used mahogany for the gas tank mounts, it is really rot resistant.

About the anodes, they are a little different on this one vs the dog clutch Cobra, just alike a Volvo, there is one under the transom mount, one on the front end of the drive and one inside the bearing carrier. The dog clutch models had that small cube anode like the Johnson and Evinrude...
