1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

That’s odd but that site is pretty inactive, maybe no one is monitoring it regularly. I’d try searching posts on that all in one gauge design then. It was a lousy idea that a lot of people had trouble with and IIRC there was a company making custom panels to replace that panel into which you...

Can’t say, I’d ask on www.ifourwinns.com I’m sure someone has dealt with it….

Trilux 33 or Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier for outdrive/prop/etc

PS I only use the spray in the inaccessible areas in the transom mount. The rest I brush on 2 coats. I find this more economical because the spray is thin too thin to really work.

Trilux 33 or Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier for outdrive/prop/etc

Hey Charlie I have wondered about that as well because Trilux is crazy expensive and has been the last few years. It’s all I ever used but when my supply of it runs out I’d consider switching…

5.0xl/V8 mer. Where do I start?

Here's an old pic when I still had the big heavy Delco style starter, I replaced that some years back with the smaller PMGR starter, much easier to R&R.

5.0xl/V8 mer. Where do I start?

My boat isn’t bad, but on some you can get at it easier if you remove the exhaust on that side.

Volvo Penta & OMC did use Holley carbs on GM engines, especially after 1990 when Rochester stopped making carbs.

5.0xl/V8 mer. Where do I start?

That carb has a lot of crud in it, much more than mine did so yep you need a good soak in an ultrasonic cleaner or soak it in old school carb and then (put on goggles first!) blast out the passages with compressed air. One area that is a problem is the idle air tubes these can be tough to get...

5.0xl/V8 mer. Where do I start?

I had that problem on my boat when I first bought it 22 years ago and I wound up taking it to a very good local mechanic and that's all it was. Rusted/stuck anti siphon valve, it is the valve that the fuel line from the pump attaches to on top of the fuel tank.

5.0xl/V8 mer. Where do I start?

If you have a 4bbl carb you also have a 4bbl manifold so you should really stick with the 4bbl carb. Any carb you buy unless it is brand new might not be any better than the one you have. Usually they have to be cleaned out, new needle valve fitted, float adjusted, then fuel mixture and choke...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

About the pump, I’m not sure because I don’t know how many gallons per hr it flows Vs how much the engine needs. You might be able to find out how much the impeller flows at idle speed and as long as the pump flows that much it should be ok. I can’t recall exactly how I installed my exhaust...

Any leakage around the joint between the manifold & elbow? That can cause sticking valves.

    Faria Voltmeter repair possible?

You can contact them, they do repair gauges, but it might be the same price as buying a new one.

Repeat the comp test with a hot engine ignition disabled and throttle valve & choke wide open. Mine has always been between 160-170 psi. If yours tests lower on 1 or more cyls you have to find out where the loss of compression is. A common cause is sticking or burned valves.

Ok you might be able to connect your water hose to the water fitting in the pivot housing (the part the outdrive bolts to) as long as the bin is elevated above the level of the impeller. To test: disconnect the feed hose from the transom at the impeller housing, water should flow out of that...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Correct the pump is normally below the water line of the boat and it can’t self prime if that water inlet hose isn’t full of water. If you could elevate the bin higher than the impeller housing like on the swim platform of the boat and keep the bin full feeding it from a garden hose that might...
