Casting numbers help omc cobra 5.0 HO motor thought 1993

The odd thing is most of the motor appears to be original OMC charcoal, except that orange which isn't even a Ford color, many Chevrolets (factory) were that color in the old days. The OMC charcoal is the correct color for that vintage OMC Cobra series. But yes what exactly are you asking here...

    383 build requirements

ohh Bondo now there ya go, giving me ideas.... that looks great is the cam OK for marine use? what about the head gaskets and core plugs? Lol It would probably blow up my old Cobra drive, which I'm surprised is still working just fine but a V8 will fit my boat, the engine mount pads are long...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

You know I didn't realize at first, you were the guy who had the water ingestion problem with the Chapparal right? and went through at lot trying to eliminate that. Did you ever solve it? I put Volvo style (actually was designed by OMC, Volvo just used their design) exhaust on my old '88 4.3...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

Sorry to hear of your loss of course other things take a back seat when you have to go thru things like that. Maybe with the boat in the water you might get lucky. Here in Long Island the water never froze solid like it can when the winters were colder and salt/brackish water doesn’t freeze till...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

I bet your answer is either one or both of these core plugs that's a huge amount of water all of it coming from the flywheel housing. And if there is water in the oil, likely the block is cracked. A forever problem with raw water cooled inboards, you forget just once you're done. Meanwhile at...

    Water leaking from engine - 5.7 GXI-E

Sorry to say you’re goin to be pulling the engine looks like the water in the block froze and popped the freeze plug(s) in the flywheel area. No water drains there. Also you seem to have a crack in the starboard side engine mount pad.

    Can’t get outdrive fully seated

As far as the orings, I have read that if you grease em the grease can get into the groove and make it harder to seat. I just squirt a bit of motor oil on the orings, coat the d/s splines with good marine grease and it usually goes right on after setting the gimble bearing with the tool, about...

    Can’t get outdrive fully seated

same experience when mine has gone on that far and stops, it has always been the driveshaft splines, a little turn of the driveshaft & it slides right on.

    Can’t get outdrive fully seated

If it’s in gear if you turn the prop slightly it might help the driveshaft splines to line up with the splines in the coupler. On my Cobra which gets installed in neutral I use a long thin screwdriver to turn the ujoints to get the splines to line up.

Where you buy gasoline is critical.

Same here I fuel up at Seymour’s Boatyards dock in Northport Long Island. They only sell 93 octane which is what I use. Yes more expensive but I have not had problems with water in the fuel etc.

If you do a search on my user name I’ve posted how to adjust these; I’ve owned one for over 20 years.

Very Low Compessions on Mercruiser 5.0 MPI Engine. with Exhaust Manifold, Thermostat Housing Removed.

In fact when I blew up that picture of the intake it looks like it is ALREADY rotted through right under the thermostat. I looked at your earlier posts, that was a 2 yr old Merc reconditioned engine? and you had water in the sump? I think the source of that, could be a rotted out intake...

Very Low Compessions on Mercruiser 5.0 MPI Engine. with Exhaust Manifold, Thermostat Housing Removed.

Is that pic of the intake manifold with the thermostat housing removed? If so there’s a LOT of rust in the cooling passage. Did the engine have a bad overheat at some point in time? If so that could explain your compression test results. Ideally you want to do a compression test on an engine...

95 Four winns 5.8L OMC Cobra

Look very carefully at the outdrive. If it’s the joint venture OMC & Volvo Cobra which is the same as the Volvo SX besides the issue with NLA parts for the Ford EFI & ignition it may be an OK deal. However if it’s the OMC King Cobra cone clutch do not buy it. Very few parts are available for...

Engine shutdown procedure VP 8.1 Gi-J

The usual causes of this are: Leaky manifold to elbow gaskets —are there rust stains in the joint between the manifold & elbow? Elbows are not high enough above static waterline level (at least 13-14”) Engine camshaft specs with too much overlap (if engine was rebuilt) You can raise idle speed...

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

I'd say so, still I wonder where the moisture came from? Maybe only condensation? I know that Merc did a few things to try to keep the manifolds hotter to prevent condensation from forming in the exhaust. The tried the warm manifolds set up were the manifolds don't get water flow till the 'stat...

    My 84 4winns horizon 195 project.

I have 4 vehicles that I maintain (one of these will become a restoration project) and the old Four Winns. And we do most of our landscaping so I maintain all the small engines as well. None of my friends & relatives my age do any of this so I feel like I’m doing pretty well & am thankful for...
