Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

You have a good point there; especially on a “cold manifold” system where the manifold/elbow gets water flow all the time. Merc came out with the warm manifold system for this reason where the elbows always get water flow but the manifolds don’t until the stat opens. This keeps the manifolds...

Manifolds (Trying to figure out what I am looking at)

The manifolds are new Mercruiser but did you check sealing surfaces for flatness & level with a straight edge & feeler gauges? This is especially important with wet joint exhaust. I’d go back & do that. See what Merc’s spec is.

    Exhaust Riser?

You can test manifolds by filling the water passages with Acetone and watching for leaks at the exhaust ports. Careful though because it’s quite flammable. It has lower surface tension than water so that’s why it may show leaks where water won’t. Best done with the elbow removed.

    Outboard conversion w/out a bracket??

I have seen some of these done over at www.thehulltruth.com they usually use some kind of transom extension though and the inside of the transom has to be extensively strengthened due to the different forces and greater weight on the transom vs an I/O. It is very expensive, time consuming and is...

    Exhaust Riser?

They do look pretty good, you'll be able to tell better when the sealing surfaces are totally cleaned up.

    Exhaust Riser?

Yep you replace them, it is not a complex job However, the not running part, is a seperate problem, probably related to it not being used for 5 years. Probably have bad fuel that needs to be pumped out and the fuel system cleaned from the pump to the carb (or fuel injection). And running it...

    3.0 Mercruiser

What’s the gas in the fuel filter look like? How about the anti siphon valve? Fuel pick up? Tank vent?

Oil change interval, synthetic or no, curious what we all do

Even when the M1 didn't meet that MS 6395 I did 2 Blackstone Labs oil analyses and my 07 Hemi came out very well.

    Mercruiser 5.0mpi w/yamaha outdrive

Yep that's the way to do it. one of these days, I MIGHT convert my OMC over to Merc...

    Mercruiser 5.0mpi w/yamaha outdrive

Sounds like someone already had a boat with a Yamaha drive and replaced the original engine with a later model Merc.

Oil change interval, synthetic or no, curious what we all do

I do try to follow exactly what the OEM says to use, especially during warrantee, the one time it became confusing was when there was a spat (or so it seemed) between FCA and Mobil. At one time Mobil 1 had full approval in Chrysler products but that changed when Fiat bought into them, Fiat was...

    Bellows replacement

Yep and the play on words that they used: Quicksilver is old time miner slang for Mercury! Even on my old OMC where you can't find parts everywhere, I always use OEM for bellows, impellers, and any other critical parts. I have used Sierra gaskets between the drive and the pivot housing and...

    9.9hp water in crankcase oil

The other causes could be corrosion on the sealing surfaces of the cyl head and block, a corroded through area between a water passage and oil passages, or a cracked head or block. Looking at pix of outboard taken apart, corrosion where the head gasket seals on the block or cyl head is not that...

    Bellows replacement

What I’ve done besides using OEM parts is to pull the drive at the end of each season & check for small cracks starting in the folds. When you see that, it means that the rubber is starting to get hard & less flexible. For me that’s usually 10 years. So my next replacement is in 2 years.

    Lifespan of 4.3 V6?

Even after an overheat blown HGs & water in the oil 6 years after the top end overhaul mines at 160-170. Can’t ask for better than that!

    Lifespan of 4.3 V6?

The 4.3 is really 3/4s of a 5.7. The main differences are the split journal even fire crankshaft; and the balance shaft on the later models. Neither of these usually causes problems or results in a shorter lifespan. Then on the 4.3 V6 cyl heads you don’t have a pair of exhaust ports right next...

    Lifespan of 4.3 V6?

Yep that’s what happens. It depends on what kind of water you boat in. If in freshwater that can last a very long time. In salt water I plan on inspecting & likely replacing every 5-7 seasons. Doing that I never had a failure from the exhaust in 20 seasons in salt water. What some people find is...

    Bellows replacement

An OEM bellows can last as long as 10 years, I feel it’s well worth it.

    Lifespan of 4.3 V6?

I’m still running an original 1988 pre Vortec short block on mine. Replaced the cyl heads in 2017, still running well. They will last as long as you maintain the exhaust system & avoid overheating. And this one has been run in salt water for over 20 seasons. If one of these had water in the oil...

How do you all like your remote oil filter setups?

I researched that this past year. I wanted one because I have to pull out half of the rear seat to get at mine and move the battery back on that side. I heard about changing the block bypass valve, and looked into that. Here's the thing. The V6 and the V8 are different in this respect. On the V8...
